Now, here's where it gets interesting. I finally told my friend that I was going to play Pokémon, and he told me that just to make things interesting, I should challenge myself by doing a 'Nuzlocke'. He gave me the rules, and I decided to do it, and then he sent me to /vp/ because you guys would get a kick out of it or something.

The point is that a 22 year old man who knows very little about Pokémon is going to play Pokémon Fire Red for the first time, as a Nuzlocke challenge, and he will be keeping you guys updated with screenshots. I will be letting you know of my discoveries as fast as I can give you them. I will also allow you to nickname my Pokémon.

I have found the talk of Pokémon to be a little annoying, but I'm coming into this unbiased, since something so popular has to be good... right? I do like some of the creatures I've seen, so who knows.

Please abstain from spoiling me about anything, because this is my learning experience, but if it really seems like I am stuck at some point of the game, I will accept tips on what to do.

I need to set up a bit, I'm a bit of a slow guy, but I'll start the game in a minute.

Battle scene - since it's your first play, leave it on. It's just about moves cutscenes.

Battle style - if you faint/kill an adversary pokémon, "shift" asks if you want to swap your pokémon for another, and "set" doesn't ask. Most Nuzlockers put it on "off", but it's up to you.

I try for that feel every time I get a new game. The first time I play, I try to really immerse myself in the game experience (where this is, what this does, where that path goes, etc). Of course it doesn't work for Pokemon anymore, but unique games or games from franchises I don't play often are great for it.

Hey OP, if you run into a Pokemon, and it has a sparkly effect and an odd colour to it, make it faint immediately. That's a known problem with ROMs and can delete your file.

OP, don't miss an opportunity to raise your Pokemon, just telling you now. Nuzlocke's are notorious for disappointment. Also, you really might want to change the battle style back to Shift from Set, since this is a new game to you.

OP, if you see a Pokémon of a different color than it normally looks, and it sparkles when the battle starts, make sure YOU CATCH IT. It doesn't really say this in FireRed, but these are called Shiny Pokémon. They are EXTREMELY RARE, so much so that they have a 1/8192 chance of appearing. They're basically for bragging rights. If a Nurse ever tells you that your Pokémon has "Pokérus", immediatly put it in your PC (you'll see this later). Pokérus is even rarer than a Shiny Pokémon. It makes competitive training LOADS easier, and although you're nowhere near that level, it's good to have as an option. The reason you should keep the Pokémon with Pokérus in the PC is because you'll keep Pokérus indefinitely. If you keep your Pokémon with you, you'll eventually become immune to Pokérus. You can infect more Pokémon by battling with the infected one in your Party (group) with the uninfected ones after. Just put those miscellaneous Pokémon in the PC, and you're good to go.

I'm only telling you this because no one in the game does, and too many people have lost golden opportunities. Chances are you won't even see this stuff, though.
