So I kind of want to get into this game, but I don't know where to start. I've played some fighters before (MvC2, Power Stone, SC2) but was never very good at them - I played against the computer and that was basically it.

Where should I start? Are there any tutorials that'll give a general rundown of the game mechanics and "what matters" in a match? Or is the best way really just to throw yourself onto online matches and try to swim?

That's only going to teach me combos and follow-ups though. It seems to me as though defense and landing the first hit are equally important!

Well shit, you've already got the right mindset down. Basics first, combos later.

The shoryuken link posted is a very good start.
I recommend getting into some Endless Mode matches once you're ready to start playing somewhat competitively.
And one execution tip that really helped me: do some of the trials. They'll help you work on your timing a bit.

That wasnt a really serious answer to your question, but training mode is for much much more than just combos, you can learn spacing, what beats what, set ups, option selects, safe jumps, a lot more than just combos.

You probably hear this a lot, but you should probably stick to a character like Ryu until you get the basics down.

If you do chose to play Ryu, you need to watch this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcMVI-7cn04

It would probably help if you watched that anyways, but you might not want to dedicate an hour and 30 minutes to it if youre just getting into the game.
    >> Anonymous 06/03/11(Fri)21:52 No.97353705
    >>97352452

    1) Pick a character- one you like or Ryu/Ken if youre unsure about the cast
2)Learn to do special moves consistently
    3) Go into challenges and do your character's trials, learning some of the most basic links and combos
4)Head to eventhubs or shoryuken.com and peruse your character's forums, paying attention to the matchup and combo threads
5)Go online and fight against others. Save the replays where you get absolutely trounced.
    6)Remember that losing is fun.

    That's about it.

to be more specific, you should pick a character LIKE Ryu. to me, picking any of the original cast is a fine place to start. so:
    Ryu
    Ken
    Blanka
    Chun-Li
    E. Honda
    Guile
    Dhalsim
    Zangief

They're generally pretty basic compared to some of the other characters. Try one of these 8 and go from there.

If I may make a recommendation, OP, let me suggest that you find a character, whichever one you think looks coolest or you think fits your style the best, and stick with him or her. You need to start out maining someone so you can understand how that character's moves work. Learn how to use every move for every situation. Once you come out of your bubble and you feel more confident you can either stick with that character or give the rest of the cast another once over and find someone who fits your style better now that you've developed one. If you just keep picking different characters all the time you'll never understand how an individual character works on a fundamental level. That doesn't mean trying someone else every now and then will ruin you, just stick to a main and you'll go far.

lolno. The rest of the World Warrior cast maybe, and even Zangief takes some skill against fireball spammers, but Dhalsim is a nightmare to really get good with.

But if you feel like using him and you really want to be a great Dhalsim player, don't let us stop you. A good Dhalsim is a frustrating motherfucker to fight.

Go through the trial mode too. Super's is kinda basic. If you can get the old game, go through that one's trial mode too.

The mode is half practical, half show-off stuff, but it should give you an idea of what a character can do.

As a boss character? Hes one of the most annoying faggots to fight in the game. He didnt mean the actual character in multiplayer.

Good health, nasty damage, and he's fucking psychic on hardest. You basically need to learn what he does at each range and abuse the shit out of it to beat him perfectly.

It's only really a problem online because of how safe it becomes with latency. That doesn't mean it's unbeatable. It just becomes a fuckload harder to deal with.
