Guys, I'm studying color theory and I'm learning about counter-shading animals like horses and ungulates have, and I just wanted to share this.

Objects that are solidly-colored look lighter on top and darker on the bottom because of light. If the object is darker on top and lighter on the bottom, it can cancel out this effect and make the object look flat. It's how a lot of animals disguise themselves.

A guy named Abbott Thayer once did a study in this, and he countershaded this duck statue to demonstrate its usefulness in camouflage. I just thought it was cool.
