I honestly do not understand why people are disliking Crystal Empire as much. Yeah, the villain was shallow, get over it. The villain was not the focus. The world building was great, the character interaction was fantastic, all ponies had their fair amount of screen time, it was funny, it was entertaining, it was well-paced (which is rare for a two parter of pone), it used its villain in a way that he was intimidating, but without giving too much focus on him, Spike finally played a role in a two-parter...Yeah, there were the mediocre songs. But what else is really bad in this episode?

The other times we saw him being kind of indirectly threatening was when that aura was spreading over the city, how Cadence was growing weak, and that one flashback when they were in chains. But it didn't "feel" like that was really Sombra. Those felt more like some intangible force that couldn't be fought, which was kind of reinforced by the fact that you didn't even know what the fuck the main cast was doing half the time to try to "save the empire." You didn't feel like the villain was the main focus because he wasn't written well, and the episode majorly suffered because of that one little thing.

You bring up fair points but even after a few rewatches all of the things threatening the kingdom just seemed random and not interconnected because they didn't define who he was well enough early on. Sure he actually got a pony-like body at the very end but the straw that broke the camel's back for me was his lack of dialogue. There was something threatening the kingdom, but it didn't seem like it was Sombra.It's funny because I think that a really well written show could pull off the mysterious villain until the end thing, but it just felt out of place here.
