After not being alone at all. The first time she became NMM, she hadn't been imprisoned.

Also, look at the first episode, and note how the phrase they use is "imprisoned WITHIN the moon" not "ON" the moon. And likewise, how Luna's silhoutte appears on the face of the moon itself.

This seems to imply that she wasn't just on the surface, but in some kind of magical state inside the moon itself, or possibly she became one with the moon. In which case, it's quite likely she was in some sort of statsis, or only vaguely aware of time passing.

I think magic in FiM works like it does in Dragon Age.
The more adept you are at it, the more susceptible you are to be possessed by spirits, good and evil.

Hence Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorn is something like the Circle of Magi.

I've only seen one or two fics that make any mention of the "great sorrow" that the pilot says Celestia felt when she imprisoned her sister.

That to me is much more interesting an idea than the fan theory that she's just evil. The show sets up their conflict as a tragedy that hurt BOTH sisters.

I think it's a case of ponies confusing what Celestia is capable of with what she will do. Celestia is intimidating to a lot of ponies because she has the power to end day and command of all the pony. Some strive to impress her like they would a combination super celebrity and president. Others just freak out, not knowing her real and giving personality. Anywho, I really doubt Celestia had full control of the Elements - they embody friendship, and she was trying to use them to defeat her only real friend (as opposed to servant, student or subject).
I imagine the only reason she used them at all was because she couldn't defeat Night Mare Moon herself - at least not without killing her. Letting her have her way was not acceptable. If the sun doesn't rise, EVERYTHING DIES.
So she used the magical equivalent of a nuke for a purpose it really wasn't designed for, and the consequences were more extreme than she expected.
Maybe she had only intended the imprisonment be for a few months. Maybe she thought she could undo the spell herself when she had a better plan.
But it wasn't, and she couldn't.
So she had to wait for someone who could use the elements properly, and hope her sister wasn't going to be lost when she forced herself out.

Ugh, Twilight Sparkle is such a Mary Sue. She's the most magical unicorn but can be modest about it, she gets her own dragon familiar, even her name "twilight" makes reference to the midpoint between night and day (Celestia and Luna, putting her right between the two goddesses).

The other ponies have flaws they have to contend with, like being shy, or braggarts, or stubborn. Twilight Sparkle has all these none-problems, like she's an introvert (but not really 'cause look at all these friends) or maybe she's actually TOO smart. In the Winter Wrap-up episode, she was so special she didn't belong on any of the three teams for cleaning up the town, she was put in charge of *all* of them and given a fancy all-three-teams-at-once jacket. Might as well write Harry Potter fan fiction and have the sorting hat flip out about how your super special unique witch self-insert belongs to all four houses.

They should have named her Twilight Faust 'cause that's what she is.
