All the instances of people saying 'Why do I like this, I thought people were trolling but it's actually good' piqued my interest. Twilight Sparkle played unfairly on my character biases, and that got me through the pilot. I kept watching, and by episode 4 I was hooked.

It's made me happy to see a new cartoon that sports excellent writing and is genuinely entertaining without relying on the 'lolrandom' style of humor that /co/ likes (i.e. Adventure Time, Regular Show, etc). I like that humor too, when it's done correctly, but MLP manages to make good old-fashioned stories with morals fun and engaging, which I respect immensely.

Gorgeous visuals because of the facial expressions. I mean I'm not one to like Flash shows usually but this and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends were both fun.

The characters are likable tropes. They're dynamic enough to keep you interested and play off of each other well.

The stories are punctuated by silliness that has me LOLing for real.

Then there's the moral, which makes you... feel good.

And in some weird way, the fact that the fandom seems to like to carry the good message into their chat encourages me to think more positively in life.

I gave it a chance after seeing all the images posted on the site for a while. I fell in love with the show after seeing Fluttershy try to introduce herself to Twilight Sparkle. The fucking cuteness got to me.

I discovered it when FYAD started trolling the MLP thread on the somethingawful forums. One of the bronies there wrote a really moving speech about how he was proud to watch the show, so I decided to check out the first two episodes on youtube. I was hooked and watched the first 12 or so episodes in two days. I eventually left FYAD and I even posted a banme when the thread was gassed.

It was three weeks ago. Steam friends had ponied up their avatars for months now. I looked up the series on TVTropes. First taste of honest to goodness pony was the Winter Wrap Up song.

First full episodes were Winter Wrap Up, Art of the Dress, and Bridle Gossip. It took every ounce of control to space out my pony consumption over the following week.

Steam brony linked me to Equestria Daily.

I gave it a chance because I'm a closet fan of random things, and so when someone with varyingly similar interests mentioned it, I gave it a chance.

At first, I was highly impressed by the diversity in color. Then facial impressions, and the sheer fluidity in movement. It was like no other cartoon I've seen in the past few years. Even Hand/Digitially drawn stuff is stiff as hell.

I really liked the first episode, but Winter Wrap Up is what got me. Full on Pony Singing cast.

I'm always open to new things and years on /a/ has made me immune to feeling bad about what shit i watch even if it is for little girls. And so i started watching the first episode and i really liked the intro with the mythology and the style.

After watching the third episode I thought "Just one more, what could possibly be so bad in that?" And so it went on untill the unexpected happened, and I got hooked before I could even realize it.

Watched the pilot on the youtubes shortly after it aired because /co/ was talking about it. After I'd finished, I tried to find the second part, but it wasn't out yet. Kinda shrugged, made some reaction images of the pink one, and went about my business, pretty much forgetting about ponies. Cut forward months later and /co/ is still losing their mind over the show. I understand where you're coming from, but I really don't see the point in complaining about a fandom. As a show grows in popularity, it takes on a larger diversity of fans, and at a certain point the interests of those fans are going to conflict with one another. It's an unavoidable aspect of discussing shows on 4chan, and it occurs regardless of the actual content of the show itself. MLP has the added detriment of being an incisive topic on /co/, and so there is an additional element of trolling and false fans who are intentionally attempting to portray actual fans, and the show itself, in a negative light.

The only productive thing to do is to ignore negative comments and things which you disagree with, and try to contribute to the aspects of the fandom which you enjoy. All fans can coexist as long as we all make an effort to tolerate one another.

I think the porn detracts from the experience more than anything. The fandom is what actually made the show for me by fleshing out the pony world and adding adult undertones to everything in the established canon. I embrace the jokes about derpy as more as I love the pessimistic, depressing stuff about Luna and her hopelessly alone life.

The porn, though, just seems needless to me. The characters are not really all that sexual - or at least I'm just not feeling it. In fact, most porn made from children's shows is undesirable to me because I find most shows lack the anatomic correctness to make it attractive. I knew I would love it long before I even gave it a chance; that's actually why I took so long to watch it. The beginning of the first episode had me thinking I might have been wrong, that maybe it was actually too cheesy and predictable for me to enjoy. But I decided it wasn't fair to only judge a series by the first half of a two-parter and by the end of the second episode I knew I would enjoy it as much as I had predicted.

Honestly if you can't not love the characters on the show than i actually kinda worry about you, because its more than just liking the characters for what they look like, but rather loving the characters for how they act.

The fact of the matter is, a lot of posters in these threads have come from outside of 4chan. From family friendly forums and what have you.

They bring their shitty moral superiority and virgin eyes with them. Anything that resembles something sexual is "killing the fandom".

I don't think the fan base is all that bad. Despite /co/'s complaining, people actually do a damn good job of self-policing and keeping things in one thread. When you're dealing with a flow of threads that constantly hit the bump limit, it's not easy to coordinate clean restarts every time. How many other fandoms are this fervent while controlling themselves this well? As someone who's been on 4chan since 2004, I honestly think the pony fans are doing a better job of it than probably any other fandom I've seen.

The porn is weird, and I don't understand the appeal. The character designs are too far removed from anything resembling human anatomy to have an effect on my libido. I'm guessing people are primarily attracted to the characters' personalities and voices, which, incidentally, can't be transferred to pictures. Then there's the fanfiction, which actually bothers me quite a bit more, not because of the subject matter but because of the intense attention to detail. It's cool to like the show, but some of these people are clearly obsessed. If anything turns me off to the fandom, it's the fan fiction.

To answer the OP, I watched it after some people mentioned it on /v/ or something. I thought it was pretty boring at first, but I started liking it from episode 3 onward. I don't know why people say episode 3 isn't any good. I think it's pretty solid.

I'm a frequenter of /u/, and I originally came to /co/ for information/rumors on the new Avatar: Korra show. Eventually I starter sticking around since /co/ is fucking hilarious and the popular cartoons here are usually pretty good.

I ignored MLP threads until all the rumors about Dash being a dyke became prominent. If you have ever visited /u/, you'd know that super-subtle-lesbian-subtext is our bread and butter, and if a girl had rainbow hair, that was enough subtext for me.

So I watched it, was apprehensive at first, but was liking it by the Gilda episode. I got the toys from McDonalds. I look forward to the new episodes each Friday.

okay this part is accurate. They usually aren't filled with 34 though, but that may have changed since I haven't been following them as closely in the past week or so. There also hasn't been nearly as much discussion/enthusiasm over the show, and a lot of the threads are filled with the same dozen or so images. Essentially, here's my take. I'm a legitimate oldfag. As in an oldfag of yore. I've been on 4chan since 2004. And yeah, when I actually think about it like that, it makes me feel really old and sad.

Now, people both in and out of the fanbase want to talk shit about it, but here are three observations I have:

1. Anyone who thinks that MLP fans are any more creepy than anything else this site has seen are severely wrong. I don't mind the humanized porn. The humanized porn is essentially just drawn porn of people with funky colored hair. Japan's been doing that since the 70's. I think it's mostly because people find the characters personalities endearing, and wish to project their own desires for intimacy on them. Plus, 4chan basically codified rule 34. 4chan sexualizes stuff. It's what it does.

2. The shipping is not a big deal. At all. No one takes it seriously, and I personally think with most people, the shipping is more about the idea that people find the idea of the cast being in love with each other to be sweet. I only think a small percentage of people even get anything sexual out of it.

3. As for the people that actually do get something sexual out of the ponies, and the actual ponies, yeah, I think it's kind of weird, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't fapped to furry porn. Contrary to what people think, furries actually really aren't hurting anyone. People who get up in arms about this shit really need to find something more worthwhile to get upset over, like politics, or how America has fallen into the pocket of big business, and is basically run by corporate funds. OH WAIT SAME THING.

I think there's a pretty wide variety in terms of how porn is produced, to the point where I wouldn't generalize about porn being generally misogynistic. firstly, let me say that i think porn is a very good, very important thing to society. in moderation.

but porn does objectify. that is the point of porn. the definition of Pornography (as a general term, mind, not just sexual porn) is publications dedicated to an obsessive or voyeuristic level with a subject.

the entire point of porn is to separate the people from the pussy. objectify. even the supposed "feminist porn" or "story porn" is porn, because it's centred around the physicality of women.

similarly, films like Kill Bill and Sucker Punch, you could argue, are porn, because they reduce the characters to, for the most part, trite stereotypes.

The problem is she's already been successful like twice. She impressed Hoity Toity, and had Sapphire Shores order a bunch of dresses from her. You know, I remember being very confused when /co/ started talking about this show. At first I thought it was a meme or something, but then came November, and they were still talking about the show. Around late December, /co/ had not relinquished the constant pony threads. I was feeling like I needed a new show to close in the gap that the absence of Mystery Incorporated had left behind (seriously Cartoon Network, get that shit figured out right now), so, I decided to give it a try.

Well, the rest of the story you probably already know, it is the story of countless others. "Hmm, this is actually not half bad. Wait, I liked it? WHY DO I LIKE THIS? Etcetra, etcetra..." I started with the Look Before You Sleep episode, and from there went back to watch all the other episodes released at that point just to see if the quality was consistent. I was inevitably won over by Dragonshy and Swarm of the Century.

I didn't have any bias towards it, but I gave it a chance after some members of a forum I use were bugging me about watching it for like a month and a half. Also, I wanted to fully understand all the crossover pics I was seeing.

not gonna disagree there but I think you're drawing attention away from the actual subject here (the person fapping to the porn) to the porn itself and the way it's produced. The argument is more about the guy fapping to the porn. Hence why a person above likened it to eating your own shit. That's not illegal either but it's still a pretty disgusting thing to do.

I should put out the disclaimer though that while I feel that the way the porn you mentioned is produced is pretty awful, there is kind of a difference between the producer and the consumer here, and I feel that's a different argument.
