There doesn't seem to be any hierarchy in the series other than "Celestia at the top", no, but bronies have long noticed Earth ponies get shafted in the powers department. It leads to a lot of fan speculation about them being second class citizens and the like.
A few people have theorized that they're literally the only ones capable of making plants grow (Earth ponies control earth), and that's their contribution, but there's nothing so far in the show to support that one way or the other.

The Mayor isn't called anything except Mayor in the show. Around here we usually call her Mayor Mare, or Mayor Cougar.

I think they use the "library" as a repository of knowledge instead of a library like we know it. Sort of like the court house that stores records. You can't just go there and take out records or documents, but you could go there to copy something or reference something.
But yeah, it seems unlikely that the rural population of Ponyville really have want or need to go to reference anything. Odds are they each have their own personal shelf of books that concerns their own interests and job descriptions. The Library is a general store house of everything else.

Mixing friends, LAN parties and ponies ALWAYS turns out awesome. I had the best night ever last friday. Didn't get back until 6AM. And the party was at MY OWN HOUSE. Halfway through the night we decided that we needed to find the last McDonalds ponies in central Texas. And by god, that's what we did. We also went around waking up our friends, stuffing 7 people into a 5-seat sedan (I don't know WHY we didn't keep using my van). Once we got back from McDonalds (still early, only about 1AM) we LAN'd a shitload of Monday Night Combat until we decided to head back out and go to Wal-Mart and pick up more dudes. We then returned at about 6AM to get our shit and go home.

That's true that Big Mac was hurt during the apple harvest but we really don't see him doing any work at all in episodes he appears in (I can't recall any). Whenever there is a farm scene and see Applejack she is usually beneath a tree getting apples and Big Mac is nowhere to be seen. Hell, Applejack even sells the apples herself. The characters live and work independently as adults would, but seem to have the mentality and emotional reactions of children or teenagers.

It's a writing technique people of kid's shows use to make plots easier. Characters who are bound to parents and lack independence aren't as applying to the audience as those who look after themselves. A character with a house and job opens up the flood gates for story potential, but the childish attitude keeps them relate-able to the audience and let's you tell moral-tales.

The whole "Pony Social Class" thing is a little weird, but at least it gives us something to talk about.

For Earth Ponies, I definitely see them as the lower class at least in terms of work. Apple Jack is perhaps the best example as she works in an Orchard: she's a serf farmer. That being said, she sells her produce for profit, so its not exactly a classic European Dark Ages Model. Pinkie Pie, the other Earth pony, works as a baker. Again, not exactly a high class position, but still a business operation.

The Pegasus ponies seem to really get it good in this show. Hell, they have a whole FREAKIN' city only they can set hoof in. Ever read Chinese or Indian history? There were specific gardens are areas in the capitals that only people of specific classes were allowed to look at. If someone of an inappropriate class saw something beyond his station, his eye balls were plucked out.

A. The OP has to have keyworlds, namely mlp, pony, ponies, hub, and probably the main cast names. This is how the archiver finds threads, and why you see sometimes unrelated threads in the unconfirmed portion.

B. The general image is a specific image, a png format and if altered at all, will not register, this includes resize or even the change of a single pixel.

With those two things, a general is born, or captain planet, I forget which.

My theory is that Cloudsdale is simply the pegasus neigh-borhood of Canterlot (remember the cloud-building we saw in ep 1's intro above Canterlot?), originally built around the weather factory to accommodate the pegasuses that worked there. I figure for reasons of balance the Earth Ponies are probably the strongest of all ponies and are the most adaptable to different skills other than those concerning their racial benefits (example: flying for pegasi and magic for unicorns).

Also, thinking from a purely evolutionary stand point, it would seem logical that pegasi, unicorns, and pegasi unicorns are all evolutionary offshoots of the earth pony species. Some kind of mutations in the earth pony could have occurred and flourished creating the other species. This could imply a degree of variability in the earth ponies that make them valuable in searching for new mutations that could benefit pony society, such as precognitive abilities. This makes sense. Earth ponies seem to have more variety of special skills than the other two types, which may be their true ability: being able to adapt better. Of all the Pegasi we've seen, Fluttershy is the only one who doesn't seem to work in some sort of sky or weather related job. While alicorn has been used by some people for some time (I want to say the late fifties? Don't quote me on that) to mean "horse with wings what also got itself a horn", the word traditionally referred to the horn of a unicorn.
