Used to work on the show in the 80's

I was just a helper monkey, but I remember a little about it.

First off, the reason all of you remember this show from different times is because, as far as I know, they were making the fucking show from the fifties to the 90's, when they finally shut down. Weird show to work on, let me tell you. the dudes working the puppets and voicing them (real cheap fucks up here) were CREEPY, and never fucking talked to anyone else who worked on the show. And that poor little girl man, they were always scaring the shit out of her. Sometimes I had to pry the puppets off of her when they attacked her with them. Seriously.

And another thing was the writing. You guys might be traumatized by what you saw, but over half of the episodes we made while I worked their were never shown because they were too fucking creepy. the write (just one) was a real sadistic child hating fuck, let me tell you.

I was only 17 when I worked for the show.

I swear it was 80s. One of my tutors worked on it for like a month in the stop-motion department or something; he didn't elaborate. Something about having to finish up late at night, and the sounds there.

All he had was one section of film - test footage I think - of this trippy dream sequence. At least I think it was a dream sequence. There was a lot of red. I heard screaming on the track, but nobody believed me at the time. When I asked him about it, he said nothing.

It was my uni's art department grail to find the episode he worked on; but it never really took off on our shores. I guess they just outsourced now and then.

Does anyone remember the halloween episode? Where Percey and Janice go out to find the candy treasure of blacktooth the pirate? I thought it was pretty cool when I was little, but thinking back, it was creepy as hell. I mean, I think it was hinted at, but I'm positive that Blacktooth's ship was made out of teeth he had pulled out of kids, and his sails were made of their scalps. My brother used to be a co-owner of a studio and he told me all about these guys.

Basically he said that one day these 3 guys just showed up and asked for a chance to pitch a show to him and his partner. So he pitched it to them, using the puppets to demonstrait a scene they were describing. For the love of god my brother said he couldnt stand any of their voices except the one who was pitching it. But his partner was fucking facinated as all hell by it and said it had great potential.

So my brother said
"Alright, we'll give you a shot. I don't really get what your trying to sell but iv been wrong before so why not?"

Remember now, this was back in the 80's and i was much younger then my bro, so after school let out(i was like 15) and when mom was still at work i would go to the studio to hang out and watch as some of the shows were made. I even got a summer job as a stage hand.

Anyways, i was sitting in the first time they shot for this show. My brother and i were sitting by the camera with his partner as all of this went down.

They get started and not even ten minutes go by and the girl starts crying her eyes out. They call cut and we try to calm her down. This happens another 5 times before i have to leave. What they were making this poor girl go through was horrible. I actually got to see the pilot for the show. There were 5 lines of dialog in it and the rest were just the puppets moving slowly and 10 minutes worth of the girl crying.
These people were sick.

I actually got lucky this time since the writer was there. Tall motherfucker. Greasy as shit hair. Wore decent clothes. Semi-formal stuff.
But what stood out were his eyes. I'll never forget how they looked. They were dull and dark. They honestly looked like doll eyes. I didn't have the balls to talk to him. And all the while he just stood off to the side and watched with a blank face.

My brother and i kinda became alittle obsessed when it came to understanding the show. Nothing to huge but we did spend a few sleepless nights talking about it.(that can sound very gay in a certain state of mind) I started tracking down any information i could about the 3 guys that pitched it to my brother and i found out that these guys had been to 9 differant states already with this show. This was the third instate(Ohio) studio they went to with this. They had been at this since the early 70's, late 60's. I even found a few pictures of the three guys that pitched it from back in the 70's and they looked ecactly the same. Well one of them had longer hair, one grew a mustache and the last one had glasses now. other then that, they were EXACTLY THE SAME!

My brother started to fucking hate everything about the show and he was just itching to find a reason to get rid of these guys. As soon at the ratings started to sour due to fans not liking the latest girl(the 8th!) he finally put a stop to it. He told them to shoot the last two episodes and take their puppet shit and get lost. They were very mellow about it all honestly.

about five years later Alvin up and killed himself. ODed on perscription pills for headaches. They found the guy sitting in his chair watching a movie.

Of course they had a lot of different girls, the shows been filming since the 60's if I recall correctly based on the information I've gathered.

I remember at least two redhead girls, and possibly one that could have been South American (with a red wig though, I don't know if I'm imaging something).

I noticed that the actress changed though, when I was watching the show. But I remember all of them at one point stopped acting (sometimes in the middle of a line) and just look at the camera real scared, not crying but weeping and always wiserping something under her breath. I always felt that she was talking to me but she always seemed so worried.

I looked EVERYWHERE for this show and I eventually found a bunch of unmarked VHS tapes at some thrift store and I was told that they could be Candle Cove. I decided to pick just one out of fear that this was just static like the other tapes I've bought over the years, but no, this one had actual episodes.

The first one was actually an episode where the girl breaks down and starts weeping and whispering. It looked like a different girl then from when I was a kid, I put the volume to it's highest to hear what she was saying and I couldn't understand any of it, it sounded like some kind of made up language, but still some sort of language, she uses the same words sometimes, I think it could be esperanto or something...
What fucked everything up was when I still had the volume way high it suddenly cut to YOU HAVE TO GO INSIDE and I freaked the fuck out.

I recently purchased a film reel simply titled 'Cartoon for Kids'. But it's not a cartoon, it's a black and white puppet show called The Candle Cove.
I heard it's the pilot.

The first few minutes was a bunch of very poorly made puppets sitting in a room, they talked but never moved their mouths and I kept hearing noises of children shouting in the background (weirdest part was that it always felt that the yells were coming from outside of my house rather then the film, but seeing that I was watching this in the middle of the night, I highly doubt it).

Suddenly I started getting color footage from what appears to be the JFK assassination, but not that famous tape, like different angles. They inter cut very fast. Also a bunch of people holding hands lying in the jungle, like Jonestown. The weird thing is that the copyright mark in the credits says 1959.

I'm guessing some one must have spliced different reels together, but whoever did so must have been a pretty fancy editor, I see no cuts in the actual reel.

I don't know. It seemed to have different colors and by the end it drug on the ground behind him. If I'm not mistaken the last thing I remember from the last episode is that suddenly there was silence. The crying and the screaming stopped. Then the screaming started up again and you saw Skin Taker walking away. I can swear I saw a fresh piece added to his cape. Hmm /co/mrades I live in fort worth and when I was in the third grade I went to this kind of crappy summer camp and one day they took us on a field trip to a television station it was pretty cool for the most part I got to meet some news anchors (it was a local station public access nothing big) but during the tour me and some friends snuck away and started exploring the building ourselves we ended up getting caught by a tall man in a suit he asked us what we were doing and we told him we were on a field trip he asked us if we wanted to see the show he worked for and he told us it was called candle cove (sound familiar? ) he brought us to a set it was covered in dust and there was only one working lightbulb it was hard to see but I could make out three puppets hanging from the ceiling by their strings and there was a big foam boat bolted to the floor behind some cardboard waves the puppets freaked me out but this man put his hands on my shoulders and ushered me and my friends to a corner there was a little girl a little younger than me there she was sniffling and trying not to cry the man was glaring at her and she stopped he told us to wait in the corner and that he would be back to deal with us when he left the girl started crying very hard we tried to ask her what was wrong but we couldn't understand her through her crying while we were waiting our teacher came into the room and led us by the arm back to the tour group.
at the end of the tour the guide asked us if we knew of any of their programs and I said "candle cove" but she said she hadn't heard of it and that maybe it was new.
I remember watching that channel for the next few weeks but I never saw candle cove.

I once bought the Candle Cove movie on VHS at a thrift store. I remembered seeing it in the theater as a kid. The spooky thing is, that theater burned down the day after I saw the movie. Contrary to how I'd remembered it as a kid, the movie on the tape was animated, instead of the live-action/puppet hybrid from the show proper. It was a pretty ordinary 80s licensed animated cash-in, although my VHS player caught on fire before I could eject it after it ended. The next day, after I got home from work, I saw that my house had burned down. When I drove back to work to tell my boss (the idea made sense at the time), I found that the offices I worked at bad burned down! Pissed off, I turned back to my car, only to find it had burned down in my absense. I walked over to a Motel 6 to spend the night, but they turned me down; when I asked why, the lady simply pointed to the old "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" sign. When I looked down, I realized that my clothes had caught on fire!

I used to have this book about forgotten TV shows and films (a friend borrowed it and lost it which is why I don't lend books anymore), I bought it at one of those library sales where they get rid of stuff nobody checks out. The book was from the 80s when people used to swap VHS and betamax tapes around to watch shows and this book was sort of a guide to the esoteric stuff from everywhere like spy shows from the USSR and early Japanese live-action stuff.

What that book said (I can't remember the name though, it might have been by Leonard Maltin or just edited, I dunno) is that there were TWO Candle Coves. One show was made in the late 50s, but the studio folded and the creators went from studio to studio trying to revive it (apparently you can find some of these failed pilots and auditions as well) until finally in the late 70s they got another show, why they went around for twenty years trying to get this made makes no sense. Supposedly they used the exact same puppets and voice actors (or close enough to sound the same) which is probably why people are remembering the show in different decades.

Anyone know the book I'm talking about? It was a light blue cover and had that terrible 80s graphics on it.
