I just watch them on the official HUB site.
I was like you OP. I was really, REALLY curious to see the apeal of the show. And once I actually got to watch it I saw that... it wasn't half bad.
The character design, as girly as it is, makes a good job at giving you an idea of the ponies' personalities. The animation is actually pretty good for flash. I found the characters enjoyable.
And the jokes where actually chuckle-worthy.

Granted, it doesn't deserve a dozen threads a day. But as far as kids show go, this one is simply enjoyable.

Lets talk about socialism.

The ponies are set up in a class structure. At the top is the unicorn ponies. Rarity owns a luxury goods shop, while Twilight Sparkle doesnt even have to work. Below them are the pegasi, the enforcers, watching from above. The proverbial big sisters. They are the dominant means of social control, as they can control the weather. Who wants to riot in a thunderstorm? At the bottom are the Earth ponies, the ones who have to do the labor, as they were not born with the gifts of their superior brethren. Notice that the two Earth ponies (Pinkie Pie and Applejack) are the ones with actual jobs, baking and farming, respectively.

Below them are all the males. The male Earth Ponies are left alone, because they are a danger to no one. The unicorns are apparently affected en-eutero by some kind of retardation agent, considering what we have seen so far. And don't get me started on the male pegasi: They are beasts of burden. They literally neigh!

Not to mention complete social control. They decide on the weather, they feed the animals... This is so ingrained, they literally FAINT when hearing about the opposite.
