Unauthorized sequel to the attached fic from last night: -------
Rainbow dash tossed and turned in her sleep. She had the nightmare irregularly but persistently. Sometimes it would be weeks until it returned to her. Sometimes it would come several nights in a row. And though it had changed over time, in many ways it was always the same.
When her nightmares first began, as a filly, they were little more than fragmented memories. Trotting along the mountain with her parents... the first rumbles of the avalanche... being pulled through the air by her mother... watching, helplessly, as her father leapt from crag to crag, was struck by a rock, stumbled, fell...
Staring down at him from her dream, she willed him to run faster, to get away. And slowly, night by night, her nightmare changed. His feet became faster, his body hard and strong. He smashed through rocks and ran at an impossible speed. Yet it always ended the same way. No matter how fast he ran or how far he got, he would eventually stumble, fall and disappear from her sight. And as fell, a persistent thought would rise from the back of her mind: "You will fail."
She awoke with a start. The haunting nightmare felt vivid and real. But upon waking, she always found an even fainter, earlier memory returning to her like a candle in the night. She was just a young filly, half asleep in her bed. Her father stood next to her, softly singing her favorite lullaby. As she drifted off to sleep, he leaned and whispered gently in her ear. "Follow your dreams."
Rainbow Dash fluffed her pillow and settled back down in her bed. But before returning to sleep she swore to herself, once again, that she would one day join the Wonderbolts, whatever it took. |
