As someone who enjoyed the 80s series, I definitely enjoy this one so you might as well.

First, I'd say go back and rewatch the old MLP cartoon. Outside of Escape from Midnight Castle, they really aren't as dark as you might remember them.

That being said, you'll probably enjoy the pilot episodes quite a bit, as it has exactly that. The action is toned down in comparison to EFMC, but the dialogue is smarter and it has a better backstory.

The show proper is more episodic, comedy based, although there are a few adventure themed episodes. Its infinitely smarter than the series before it, and a lot more fun to watch.

Equestria's old palace once stood in the Everfree Forest. It's where they find the Elements of Harmony in the 2nd episode. My theory is that the old castle is where Celestia first did battle with her sister and banished her to the moon. She abandoned the site and relocated to Canterlot either out of remorse for her actions, or because the intense magic energies left behind by the sisters' clash made the land unlivable for ponies.

I feel sorry for Spike fans. He will never get his own episode you know that right?

Personally I loved the implications of the talk about the forest. It shows there is something terribly "not right" with Equestria, when the lands that lay outside it function normally.

Also consider that the iconography and heraldry used by Celestia shows a conventional Cosmology for the planet, showing other planets in the same star system, its pretty clear something terribly askew is going on in Equestria. If we have a star system with other planets, what do they orbit when Celestia and Luna play foosball with the Equestrian sun? Methinks the ponies are living a lie. Or at least in a weird Celestia dominated pocket reality.
