You know, this show isn't that bad. The writing is actually competent and that's a rarity in todays cartoons. Still I can't comprehend how /co/ can watch it and be so engrossed with it. It's after all a little girl show. I can't understand how anyone can watch it and not feel a deep and profound shame. In the end it isn't a matter of quality but self-respect.

Kaziklu after some of the things I've seen you do here I don't think you have any say in matters of self-respect.

Don't bother asking "such as?", we're not discussing this. If you're unaware or even proud of your actions, then you have no grounds in judging these MLP fans.

It's hard to explain properly, but somehow, the shame adds to the fun. The fact that you're capable of overcoming this shame - or better: give it a place in your overall MLP experience, makes you feel strong and self-confident. Some people accuse us of being sad basement-dwellers who indulge in girly camp, but we're quite the opposite. This show doesn't weaken our minds, it strengthens it. Proud Bronies are we.

I beg to differ - MLP:FIM is a staggeringly average cartoon, and that's not even 'average in a sea of tripe', I mean average compared to the market - Generation Rex, Ben 10, Adventure Time, MAD, Johnny Test, Transformers Prime, etc.

You know what would actually be worth the threadspam? Something like Symbionic Titan, and not for the fucking stupid dance scene that everyone on /co/ keeps jizzing over nowadays. Instead we have little girls playing with their ponies.

If you want to understand why /co/ took a liking to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, first you must take a look at the previous MLP animated series, partner.

The original series, called "My Little Pony and Friends" was your generic 80's cartoon aimed to sell toys for girls: Foced cuteness everywhere, lots and lots of characters (minus a personality), some stupid songs, cardboard villains and the forced morals at the end of each episode, PLUS 3 annoying human sidekicks that always ended up solving all the problems anyways. It hasn't aged well, and watching it now would feel like torture.

The second series removed the humans and put the ponies into a "normal" world to attempt a slice of life cartoon instead of the fantasy theme of the previous one. Except that "slice of life" for them equaled to "stories about parties, shopping, love crushes and banal crap."
It was a bad series to begin, it feels even worse now.

The third series was a piece of crap made of nothing but clichés, flash animation and "BUY OUR STUFF NOW", so the least said about said series, the better.

The fourth series, aka "Friendship is Magic" surprised everyone because it avoided the previous mistakes and was actually good. It's fun to watch, it's nicely animated (it avoids the "2-view" or "talking heads" cliche of the previous series) the background music is good and unique for each character, and said characters finally have... a character of their own.

/co/ expected it to be a massive flop, but it wasn't. That's all.

    Yup.

this is most obvious in the GIlda and Trixie episodes but the morals don't seem forced.

In the old shows both Gilda and Trixie would have made a sappy apology and everyone would be forgiving and then make friends

not here. Gilda and Trixie are botched and get what they deserve. Moreover Rainbow Dash actually had to make a real choice between her old and new friends. there was no everyone wins scenario

You concept of self respect is REVERSED.
Having self respect is the ability to watch and do what you want WITHOUT feeling shame, because you HAVE self respect. Not watching something just because other people look down on it, or tell you your not supposed to like it, is the very basis of NOT having self respect.

All your post is really saying OP, is that all the /co/mrades who are enjoying a show they like and feeling no shame about it are actually quite full of self respect, a quality you apparently lack

    >Having self respect is the ability to watch and do what you want WITHOUT feeling shame, because you HAVE self respect.

Doing what you want and then not feeling shame isn't the same as self-respect.

For example, kicking a 5 year old boy in the crotch, pissing on his face while he's down and then walking away without caring as everyone looks down on your actions isn't self-respect. It isn't even any kind of respect. Inb4 you point out "those are two different things" my point is your definition is flawed.

We all know what self-respect is, so there's no point in sugar coating and playing with words. Honestly I don't know why any of you even care what OP or anyone else says, it has no considerable effect, significance or influence unless you choose to make it so.

What I like is how the episodes keep people entertained and the little twists added prevent the cliches used from becoming annoying: I think everyone knew that Fluttershy was going to end up becoming badass at the end of the spisode, but all the crap her friends had to endure before that was bloody fun to watch.
The way as they respect and remember what happened on previous episodes, like Spike's crush on Rarity or Fluttershy befriending the Manticore was also a good detail, as most cartoons tend to forget everything between episodes.

If the next cartoons can follow FiM's example, this decade will be much better than the previous one.

    Yup.

Dude, I fucking hate cartoons. I'm on /co/ because I love comic books.

It used to aggravate me to no end seeing MLP threads all over the place, when I'm trying to find a thread on the latest Teen Titans release or what's happening in Brightest Day.

And then I decided, "Well, shit. I should at least watch the show; if I need to tell them to fuck off I'll be informed."

And I found the show is awesome. It's awesome because over-exaggeration is funny as hell. And it's short. I can watch an episode and go back to doing whatever the hell I was doing.

The point I'm driving at is this; do what I did. Watch it to be informed, and then try and say you aren't a fan.

Maybe I don't understand shame as well as the rest of you, but I only feel shame if someone finds out that I'm doing something. Like if I have a picture of a half-naked Ahsoka as my wallpaper, I'm not ashamed of it until I leave my laptop open and my roommate walks in and sees it and reacts appropriately. Then I'm ashamed.

Same thing for MLP, I guess. I know exactly how my friends would react, so I don't let them see that I'm watching it. While I'm watching it I enjoy it for all the reasons wise old Mac stated. Its animated well, its something different than aliens/powers/teen drama, and its done well. If I was ashamed while watching it, I wouldn't watch it. But I would be ashamed if people found out, so I keep that shit on the down low.

Not to mention the Pokemon Generals on /v/ were because of everyone circlejerking, so they made quite a few threads.

MLP is contained to mostly one-three threads at a time. And multiples are only because bronies can't find the first general thread. If you ignore the troll threads, of course. There are more pony troll threads than there are Batman threads.

Unicorns have different magical capabilities based on something or whatever. I forgot how they explained it. Like since Rarity's talent is fashion, her magic is based on that, and since Twilight's talent is magic, she can do all sorts of crazy shit.

So if a unicorn's talent is accuracy, precision, or sight, a pegasi could carry a unicorn around the battlefield, pinpointing enemy encampments and reporting their locations back to the pony hq.

There is no real place to discuss MLP (I've tried, on four different forums, and nobody will respond to a MLP thread). We discuss it where we can, which is /co/. If you think /co/ dominates our lives... you're pathetic.

Very few of us are on /co/ 24/7 discussing ponies. It's just the only place to discuss them when we want to.

I would imagine that the unicorns wouldn't be used as deep-strike troops. If we're using their D&D-ish wizard interpretation, they're glass cannons. Some are likely used as medics and support-magic types. Those that specialize in offensive abilities would likely be put on pegasus chariots and made to use hit and run tactics.

I think it's just because I feel like I've been missing a cartoon with this style lately. it feels like powerpuff girls or foster's home for imaginary friends. Like that a show like this has always been there to complete a cartoon line-up and that for a while now it had been missing from my cartoon network only diet.

I wish this cartoon was on Cartoon Network.

I'm pretty sure a unicorns talent is based on their cutie mark theme and their cutie marks are earned when they are young and seem to represent their favourite interest.

Now all unicorns get a bit of innate magic towards their interest, it's not exactly something you can change at will. If Applejack were a unicorn she would get farming magic that might help her grow apples quicker or simply good TK to harvest better. Pinkie Pie's would be kind of like Trixie's in the sense she would be all about show and parties, so impressive looking for celebrations but little practical use.

If you wanted war ponies, you'd have to train them from youth from those ponies who show interest in whatever form of military application you want from them.

Though really, to me it seems like the Pegasus are the warrior caste of Pony society as they often get guard roles and have great mobility. Unicorns seem like pony experts who have the ability to do delicate and complicated jobs complete with research. Earth Ponies on the other hand are more the worker caste of Pony society with greater strength and endurance.

Of course, every pony in Equestria is treated with respect, so being a Earth pony is no worse than being a unicorn. Everyone finds their niche through their cutie mark and it seems they have no problem with supporting everyone fairly. Sure, some are rich and some aren't, but most ponies seem content with things.

Whenever girls come in to say that it's not just creepy guys that like it, the haters suddenly disappear because they have nothing to say to that.

I think MLP is threatening the sexuality of some of the more insecure people on this board. They're not trolling, they're merely so insecure about their own sexuality that they have to accuse everybody else of being fags/pedophiles to feel better.

so ive been thinking about this image.

I think Twilight is a genetic hybrid that Celestia and Nightmare Moon bred as the ultimate weapon in the war against the elves. A creature with all of both the alicorns powers disguised as a simple unicorn. After tutoring her for years Celestia has sent her out to "make friends" ie work alongside the ponys she will be commanding when the day comes for every pony to raise arms and march forth in defense of equestria. The elves, suspecting something from this sudden appearance of an otherwise unknown unicorn assign their greatest agent, Fluttershy, to infiltrate her war cabinet. Hence why the otherwise incredibly shy fluttershy spends time with her and in Ticket Master she enters her house to "clean" (look for secrets) and try and go to the gala, a place she would otherwise avoid like the plague.

The whole nightmare moon/elements of harmony confrontation was just a testing of her powers/systems as well as a test by celestia as to whether or not her "programming" could be triggered remotely, hence the blank eyed stare and abnormal powers. Nightmare just played along as part of the test, hence why celestia didnt banish her back to the moon.

In fact, I wouldnt be surprised at all to discover that the nightmare moon prophecy was entirely fake, a false trail laid by celestia and nightmare moon to test their creation. Note all the other ponies having never heard of it or the elements of harmony, its only existence being in twilight's books, the fact that the moon still rises and night still happens when nightmare moon is "imprisoned" etc. Would be a lot easier to make an image of an alicorn appear and disappear on the moon than to imprison one of the most powerful creatures in equestria for 1000 years but then suddenly have that imprisonment fail almost on command.

The pony-millitary-industrial complex grinds away producing thousands of mind blanked twilight sparkles, the ultimate front line shock troop to counter the elves nature magic.

How come no one gives a shit if a woman watches a show aimed for little boys, hell you even find it awesome and cool because OMG you can talk about cartoons with a member of the opposite sex, nobody calls these women dykes because they enjoy something aimed for boys, but as soon as a man likes something cute that is obviously meant for boys he's suddenly labeled as a fag.

Men are expected to fulfill a role. Throughout their lives, they respond to the pressure to become men accordingly. Whenever someone breaks free from society's idea of what man should be, it scares people. It scares them because they've spent their entire lives trying to build up their manly image/ego, only to have it threatened by someone who breaks free from the cycle. Some fathers are terrified to hug their own children because it wouldn't be seen as "manly". The same thing applies here.

To be honest when I first saw ponies infesting /co/ I also found it weird because let's face it, so far My Little Pony was just merely a bland vehicle of selling toys for little girls and the old cartoons were all disgustingly sappy, but I actually watched the show to see what's all this is about and I liked it because it's good and I enjoy it so I don't give a shit if it's aimed for boys or girls.

Makes sense, actually. The Grand Galloping Gala is just their version of the San Diego Comic-Con. Rarity is a cosplayer and hopes to win the costume contest, Fluttershy checks out the exhibit hall and all the little statuettes and figurines, Applejack sets up her own shop in the hall, Pinkie Pie runs around grabbing swag, Dash, maybe, does a bunch of performances in-hall in the hopes of getting in front of a camera, and Twilight and Spike are in it for the panels.

    You know?

    Copypasted

I cam up with an idea for a more melancholy episode a while back. It was about the girls finally going to the Gala and having to deal with the reality of things versus their wild fantasies. Applejack makes good money selling her wares, but not enough to fix both her house and Granny's hip. Rarity is largely ignored as just another guest and learns that Celestia has no nephew. Rainbow Dash shows off for the Wonderbolts, but is scorned for upstaging them during a show. Fluttershy discovers that the royal gardens don't have hummingbirds that really hum and buzzards that really buzz. And Pinkie Pie finds that she can't pay for all the gourmet treats she wants to eat.

Meanwhile, Twilight Sparkle and Spike, having not hinged their hopes and dreams on the Gala, both have a wonderful time. Twilight's letter in the end will be about how life doesn't always work out the way you want it, but with the love and support of good friends, everything will work out for the better.

So here's the thing. The 6 ponies basically saved the entire goddamn land of Equestria once, arguably twice at this point. While that's fine and dandy in Ponyville/Ponytown if they were to go to a place like Canterlot wouldn't they suddenly have to deal with the reality of being heroes and super celebrities to everybody else?

I mean, Rarity would probably be the only one equipped to handle it.

I wonder if the My Little Pony franchise in general has its own convention, like Transformers. I'd assume not, but there ought to be at least one yearly gathering among MLP fans out there, if only for the MLP customizing groups, you know?

You have to assume that word would spread, especially over the time passed between them saving the world from eternal night and whenever the GGG happens.

For example, all of Applejack's family was there -- they met Twilight right at the start. But later in Applebuck Season AJ mentions they've all gone home, and that they live all over the country.

Add to that the idea that it was eternal night -- Celestia was supposed to raise the sun at that very moment. Instead, the Mare in the Moon vanished and it stayed night for a long ass time, which would have been everywhere, not just Ponyville. Inquiring minds would have been trying to find out what happened.

I think it's sort of impossible for lots of people to not know at least who they are after that.

I see you aren't rolling with the whole Mein Führer Celestia idea from these threads. Oh well.

Yeah, Rarity would probably love the spotlight, though I'd bet that Dash would promote herself as much as possible. Pinkie would try to attend every party, and Fluttershy would hide away from everybody.

The trouble is that the actual action only happened off in the middle of the forest at the old castle. What people saw was
    1) Night Mare Moon shows up to gloat
    2) Twilight Sparkle calls her out on her identity
    3) NMM skedaddles.
    4) TS's friends follow her off somewhere.
    5) ????
    6) Sun rises
    7) Princess Luna makes her returning debut
    8) Celestia puts TS in town long-term.

There would be rumors, sure. But it's hardly anything decisive to those who weren't there when it happened.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/10(Thu)19:22 No.21608466
I still don't know why are you discussing this shame shit.

There are more shameful things in life than watching a show about ponies, and then posting about them on an anonymous imageboard.

    Seriously.

I can give you that one, but what about stopping the dragon from covering Equestria in smoke for 100 years? That one was totally out in the open; dragon smoke, followed by the 6 getting ready and heading for the dragon, followed by the dragon up-and-leaving. The thing is shown to be so massive the citizens of Ponyville would have seen it leaving, and then the safe return of the six ponies.

But nobody thinks to ask "Who the shit is Princess Luna?" and follow that path of questioning? Twilight is the only one who knows who she is as Nightmare Moon, and it seems like nobody knew who Luna was.

That's what I'm saying. With the way this show is going there's no logical way they won't be stupid famous amongst other ponies.
In Ponyville they're sheltered from it because everybody knows them already, but in a high-density place like Canterlot?

I think it might make for a good episode. Them needing to deal with super-stardom kind of mirrors the culture of today and how everybody wants to be "famous".

Oh there are definitely people who will do some research and make the Luna=NMM connection (especially since all that shit is in publicly available library books). But *especially* given how easy it is to find that out if you're looking, connecting the dots from there to "TS and friends stopped her" is a lot more shaky. Everyone would know within a few days that she's kind of a bookworm.

So, going back to the Applejack family bit for a moment. Pinkie Pie throws a party after they save the world, right? Every one of her parties has a reason behind it, so wouldn't you think that all the ponies at the party, along with Celestia and Luna being there would know what went down and word would get spread that way?
    >> Anonymous 12/02/10(Thu)19:38 No.21608852
Celestia will turn out to be a villain. I mean Luna was scared shitless at the sight of her, her apology seemed forced plus she was totally bummed at the celebration.

IIRC the party was "for Luna" specifically. But I could be misremembering.

(also again this whole conversation is moot given ep7 but I like friendly discussion of minutiae so whatevs)
