The problem with FiM is simple, folks: it's good.
Cartoons have reached a stale point where they just recycle concepts over and over, use cheap animation and rely on shock value to reel in some people.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a cartoon that learned from the MASSIVE flops of the two previous MLP cartoons and showed everyone how to make a good remake of an 80's cartoon without failing in the process.
Instead of having loads and loads of characters, they just picked a few and gave them good, different personalities that can be used to move the story. They also picked a new, original visual aspect instead of reusing the old ones, so this show could stand on it's own.
Funny scripts with a few twists to keep people interested and avoiding 80's clichés like the plague, plus some subtele pop culture references and some dirty jokes hidden here and there helped too to make people realize this cartoon is completely different than any other "girly" cartoon made so far as well.

So basically, FiM's problem? Plain and simple: It makes other cartoons look bad.

It was definitely made to appeal to young girls but that's not all it's for. It's made by Lauren Faust, wife of Craig McCracken (creator of PPG and Foster's Home, which she worked on, she also worked on The Iron Giant and Cats Don't Dance, among others), and they both know that just because a cartoon is meant with kids (gender aside) in mind doesn't mean it has to cater solely to them.

Now I'm not going to say this cartoon is full of innuendos that kids won't get but adults will like Animaniacs or something, because it's not. But it's just good, well-written G-rated comedy.

Like, I like the show for its characters, its animation, its simplicity, and its absurdity. I also watch the show because the macros and bronies/ponyfags on /co/ are pretty cool and its nice to see where something comes from.

I'm enough of a fan where that I would buy a pair of shoes specifically done in the motif of a MLP character. I am NOT, however, going out and buying a bunch of MLP toys. Also, I'm not aware of much of an advertising push for MLP toys right now, so that should be taken into account when it comes to how well the toys sell.
