Dye the pieces seperately, body first them head. Head should take less time to dye, watch it carefully. If it's unevenly colored, just wash it a couple of times. Wait a day or two. Then go ahead and paint to make sure all the excess dye is gone.

It's generally recommended to let dye "settle" for a couple of months, because it will fade a bit before it stabilizes. If you really want to paint, you can see how bad it might leech through; some people say not to use sealer, some say to put a layer of black paint underneath whatever you want to paint, it's kind of fuzzy in that realm.

Idea for a holiday special:

Rudolph gets blown off course while scouting this years sleigh route, and ends up in Ponyville. While asking around for directions, he comes across Rainbow Dash. RD's excited to see a flying reindeer and challenges him to a race. Rudolph ends up injuring himself while trying to beat RD, and can no longer lead Santa's sleigh. RD is devastated, and tries to make it up to Rudolph, but only manages to make the situation worse. Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie suddenly realizes that Xmas is approaching quickly, and she hasn't yet completed her list of good deeds to get on the 'Nice' list. Frantic, she goes on a 'good deed' rampage all over Ponyville. Also, Applejack finds out that Big McIntosh has gotten her what he claims to be 'The Best Present Ever', which causes her to claim that she can get him something EVEN BETTER. Applejack enlists Rarity's expertise in generosity to help her do this. As for Fluttershy, she's helping RD take care of Rudolph, while every single woodland creature seems to be dropping in with yet another present for her, and she's running out of room to store it all. Can Twilight Sparkle make sense of all this chaos and help all the ponies solve their Xmas problems? Can she do it without having to resort to a two-part episode? Stay tuned to find out!

Actually, I'm trying to avoid having *too* many problems to sort out in the space of a regular episode (based on /co/'s reaction to the rushed pacing of episode 2), so that's why I tied Rarity's problem into AJ's, and Fluttershy's into Rd's (the too many presents thing would be more of a gag than an actual problem).

In the case of Rarity and AJ, Rarity's 'help' will allow her to go on one of her patented 'generosity rampages', which will provide most of the gags on that part of the storyline. Then, at the end, AJ and Rarity will discover that Big McIntosh's gift was something sweet and thoughtful, rather than big and extravagant, and both will learn a lesson about the emptiness of materialism.

Everyone works overtime to restore Luna's castle to it's former splendor so she could host Christmas's party at her place, but Luna is a nervous wreck because she' still feeling guilty about what she did, and she is so out of touch that she isn't sure if what she is doing is good enough for her people, etc. Throw a big and menacing snowstorm to the mix so Luna could use her powers to temporarly chase it away (so the moon and stars could be visible) and something good could result out of this.
Keep the gifts and "true meaning of xmas blablahblah" cliches out of the episode to keep people off balance, and it will be even better.

"But only a few hours into this beautiful night! How can you sleep when the night stars twinkle so brightly?" Luna's brow creased.

"Twilight Sparkle is having an Astronomy party this weekend during the new moon! We'll have hors d' oeuvres, and apple fritters, and we'll all stay up late! But we couldn't stay up every night, because then we'd be too pooped to party!"

Clearly, there was something she wasn't getting. "But during the day, the sky is just blue with a big yellow circle that's too bright to look at. You can see the moon and stars so much more clearly at night. Why do Ponies all sleep at night?"
