Like many other people on /co/, I didn't know shit about this series other than what always gets recited: "It looks western." Tired of being the odd man out, I blew two hours and a half of my time to sit and watch it all. I thought it was rather entertaining actually.

The claims that it looked like western animation were pretty justified. It didn't take me long to spot GIR, Johnny Bravo, Transformers, Powerpuff Girls, South Park, and other nods. The toilet and gross-out humor easily surpassed Ren and Stimpy (for better or for worse) by fucking miles, and the sexual humor is in large quantities, but not in the generic fan-service kind of way (Highschool of the Dead, Queen's Blade, etc).

I was waiting for moe references, ^_^ faces, and other typical Anime bullshit so I could turn it off. I didn't see any. In fact, the show seemed to pick more on it's own subculture if anything (basement recluses with no life, collecting figures and hug-pillows, uncircumcised small dicks, etc).

The English is also well used, especially in the songs (the OST is fantastic). It comes out mostly when the girls are swearing, and they do it a lot.

All and all, I didn't want to give the show a chance, but I ended up really liking it. I do sort of regret not watching it earlier so I could have enjoyed the discussions when they were constant. Then again, most of it was on /a/ and civil discussion there tends to be rare, at best.

Anyone else generally pleased with this show after seeing it?

no. I hated it. The humor was sophmoric and the sexual humor way too "in your face" to be any sort of witty, and Japanese people trying to sound American by saying random english swear words is not good

also main characters whose defining traits are "I'm a sex fiend" and "I eat cake all day, lol" are not good characters.

Basically the humor of this show can be summed up in one video
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNjqjWblwT8
    (its just as funny)

also, reported for not comics or cartoons

When i first started watching it, the gratuitous amount of sex and toilet humor was almost enough to turn me off from it
But after the episode when they first meet Kneesocks and Scanty, I suddenly got really into it! The animation was awesome and it just got more interesting to me.
So I'm definitely going to keep up with this. I don't have many Animes I keep up to date with and it'd be nice to change that since this looks really promising.

Fan-service is a crutch here? I always thought it was more of a joke, considering half of the time when they're naked or undressing, it's in the crude normal style, and any time it's not, it clashes so much with the original style that it makes for a more "WHOA SHIT" moment.

I mean, I'm sure people fap like the fist of the north star to some of this shit, but I don't really see fan service being the crutch here.

I'll give you the low-brow humor, though that kinda seems to be the point, really. It's been doing much better in these last few episodes, though.

I think they do for the most part, although I'm sure a few jokes go over their heads here and there. I remember I didn't really appreciate Danger Mouse or Beetlejuice when I was young because they were aimed at British and Canadian audiences. The humor and jokes were there, but I didn't really fully "get it" and I tended to gravitate to other cartoons.

Well the fact they constantly do it makes it a crutch. It is there go to when they can't think of anything else to do. Even if it was funny, which it isn't...I don't even see how it could be, it is just plastered every where and it would be a joke that is a crutch.

Also the Whoa Shit moments are obviously meant to tantalize and it seems to be everyone's favorite part evident by anime fans constantly posting those images when making endless Panty and Stocking threads on /co/.

    All anime is animated

It isn't really animated in a western style the animation is Japanese. The character design has some similarities to some western shows but not as much as people pretend it is.

I don't find it enjoyable, that is subjective. The fact that you find this enjoyable doesn't mean you get to post it wherever you want.

There is a difference from something that is a direct adaptation of a comic and something that kinda sorta looks like they might have copied powerpuff girls.

The show is distinctly Japanese in its humor and references. I am sure a Made men thread would be better than MLP threads...I still don't post it here even though that has more of a reason to be posted here than Panty and stocking since it is of Western origin.

I don't even like the show all that much and I think you people are being morons about what belongs on this board. /co/ regularly has civil discussions about One Piece, for fuck's sake. I can understand it if you don't like P+S, after all, the brand of toilet humor isn't exactly high brow or for everyone. But reporting and sagebombing isn't going to do shit. You're not the CYBER POLICE or some shit like that, and at the end of the day the mods decide what goes on /co/ and what doesn't.

Also the show goes out of its way to become /co/ related, even having an entire Transformers segment, and you guys still complain about it?

Jesus Christ, people. /co/ is better than other boards because it tends to be more accepting and more civil than most of the other boards on 4chan. And don't go "if this thread is full of /a/ shit then what's to stop the rest of the board from disrespecting the rules". It's not your job to enforce them, you fucking morons.

I don't care either way about this show, I haven't watched it and I have no plans to, so you guys do whatever.

But the simple fact that "half of /co/ likes it" (I wasn't here when you did your poll...so I don't know how accurate that assumption is) doesn't make anything /co/related. I would surely hope there are several anime titles that at least half of /co/ likes. I would hope half of /co/ would enjoy monster or Sword of the stranger.Even though I am sure they would I that doesn't negate the fact it isn't of Western Origin and thus fails to meet the main criteria for being eligible for posting here.

These threads are off topic no matter how you spin it, when you try and argue that it somehow is all you end up doing is making the thread worse and coming off as idiotic. Just talk about what you want and just knowledge that technically you are in the "wrong" (for lack of a better word)

It was Imaishi's first stint as director proper. Before he was just the little bitch who did keyframes for a load of different shows, including some of the FLCL footage, some clips from Medabots, and the mecha action scenes from Abenobashi.

Then Gurren Lagann happened and he was suddenly a much wanted commodity at the office because his fast and loose animation style meant he could draw 20 keyframes in the time it took for other, more detailed artists to do three or four.

Yeah I saw episodes one and two yesterday, I finished watching my usual things and decided why not.

The humour is extremely crude at times but its delivered quite well and its got better content than "I THRO SHIT AT HER BECAUSE LAWL"
Crude humour doesn't appeal to everyone but it works well for this kind of show, one where you just turn your brain off and laugh a lot.

The action is great, really great. Especially with the comic style text effects (in English despite it being Japanese, so that's nice). The shootout/car chase in ep 6 was pretty well animated and kept the action going for a good long time.

The characters are blatantly one dimensional, but that's fine since its not a very serious show anyway, the side characters or random bystanders are quite well done at times.

I thought it would be typical /a/ praisewhoring because they show there underwear, but It was way better than I could have hope, will watch again.

My Little Pony is a shitty girl's cartoon designed for the expreess purpose of selling overpriced plastic to little girls but we let those go on. If we started banning things from being discussed just because a small group doesn't like them this would be a horrible place.

I know no one will listen, but here goes:

If you don't like a P&S thread (or any thread on a topic you don't like, in fact), then just STAY OUT OF IT. It's not your job to enforce the rules. On a board where 95% of threads are on-topic, a few getting through will not affect anything.

Protip: Saging and arguing and telling people what they like is shit isn't gonna do anything.

Double Protip: You're not a mod. Don't try to do their jobs. I know you regularly complain about there being "no mods" but that's not true. I saw them deleting some of the repeated MvC3 threads, so they do stop by. And if a P&S just got over 100 posts, that means they almost surely saw it and didn't see it as that big of a threat to the integrity of the board, and left it here.

There are worse threads out there. If you don't like something but other people do, then just leave it alone. Thanks for reading.

The rules are clear and referencing something that should be here doesn't mean you cross into being a western show. The rules indicate that the only barrier is that a show be of western origin. All the references and parodies in the world doesn't alter the country the show was written directed and produced.

Guess what? Western cartoons are all based upon the same master style too, to the ame extent that anime is. And we overuse poses just as much (how many fucking times have you seen the heroic ‘camera at slight angle, body held low, one leg straight and the other bent, one arm held parallel to leg A while the other is raised, fists balled, scowl on face’ pose, for example? I guarantee you that nearly every character in Avatar, B:TAS, Batman Beyond, Ben 10, Teen Titans, Masters of the Universe, and every single other action cartoon ever released has pulled it off on multiple occasions).

And that's why we have threads on tv shows, live-action movies and video games, peripherally linked by something comic/cartoon-related? Which is what P&S is, something comic/cartoon-related. Ok, then.

Except no. Show me an example of the upwards-stare hip-thrust shot that you spaz over in Darker than Black or Dennou Coil. Or Cowboy Bebop. Or Samurai Champloo. Or Kurenai. Or Mononoke. See this shit? All the characters standing in the hip-thrust pose? (like this: http://www.infoaddict.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/superman1.jpg )

    PEOPLE DON'T STAND THAT WAY.

However, 99.5% of anime characters stand that way all the time. This is the default anime pose.

It makes me sick. It makes everything look the same. If you went and looked around, you'd see every person stands with their own unique balance. Sure, there's common ground, we all share the same basic bone and muscle structure, but people are DIFFERENT.

When all the characters stand in this pose, it makes everything look samey.

Now, it's not JUST this pose, it's a few other gestures, poses, and expressions that EVERY ANIME CHARACTER does.

If the original media was a western comic or cartoon, you can discuss it on /co/. If there's a theatrical adaptation of that comic/cartoon you can discuss it on /co/. If a Western non-/co/ series gets a comic or cartoon you can discuss that, too (but too many people take it to mean they can discuss any stupid shit they want by using the comic as justification for it).

That said, prior to the example you posted, I thought you had a ghost of a point, at least, but you really don’t. Super-exaggerated hip-thrust stuff does appear a lot of a certain few genres (note: slice of life, comedies), but you’re not even talking about that. The example you posted was not a picture of three characters pulling the same pose, but of three characters shifting their weight while they stand. That’s not a fucking ‘super-exaggerated hip-thrust’. That, as has been said earlier, is how people stand comfortably. Some people put their weight forwards, some people shift it to the side, but all of them do it to an extent and you are a moron if you think otherwise.

That's how anime looks like to me. Ridiculous, overused poses. NO ONE stands like that kid. That kid has been told specifically to "do a Ben 10" pose, which is, surprise, the overused hip-thrust. If you think that kid is just shifting his weight to get comfortable, you need to get out more.

What’s wrong with you? Those poses are not all the same. God, you can’t even find a bunch of characters by the same artist that are in the same poses.

And yes, people stand like this. NOBODY stands perfectly straight. People ALWAYS shift their weight slightly to one side, or forwards, or backwards. Almost everyone has one knee slightly bent when standing at ease. If you don’t do this, you are a fucking robot.

Not many people cross their arms like that, as it's a sign of insecurity, but that's a pretty fucking common way to stand. People shift their weight to whichever side they're comfortable with. Often this includes, yes, their hips being situated slightly forwards and to the side, especially for males who wish to seem assertive.

Superhero cartoons: square jaws are common, because square jaws signify masculinity
Other cartoons: square jaws are rare, usually given to masculine characters

Anime: pointy chins on nearly all characters.

See? It's really not that hard to realize that anime has an unnaturally uniform character design. Sure, there's an odd character with a square jaw, but you have to be blind not to see that the vast majority of characters have a pointy chin for no fucking reason.

Cartoons and anime are the same shit, much like JRPGs and WRPGs are also the same shit.

They just cater to different audiences and come from different places. Saying that something is limited to a particular style because of the place it comes from is fukkin ig'nint. Nothing has stopped western animators from adopting eastern styles and nothing has stopped eastern animators from adopting western styles. Nothing, that is, except dicks who believe one's inherently better than the other and hate variation in their medium of choice.

Okay, I typed too quickly. It's more about how whenever PSG does come up, it gets called shitty and saged right off the bat, no one says "it's okay but not co-related" like Cromartie High or Monster. People are hating on it just because it's Japanese, and they immediately assume because it has female main characters and fanservice it's one of those glorious nippon moe bullshit things. It's not, and they're missing out on something truly wonderful if they think that and try to get others to think that.

It's not just the random references, it's the fact that the whole show looks like 2 Stupid Dogs with a budget. It's amazing and stuff like this would be good for the entire animation industry if animefags and cartoonfags didn't dismiss it as being too country or too rock n' roll.

Panty and Stocking is a huge homage to /co/ so it definitely deserves mention here. Just not daily threads about it. Also I don't see why it's so awesome, I was honestly bored by it. I was expecting more out of gainax. Nice fight scenes and art style though. Also you sagefags are pathetic. It's so blatantly obvious that you' hate it's japanese. I don't get why there has to be this huge divide between japanese and western animation. /a/ thinks avatar the last airbender is shit because it's not japanese or moe and will flame anyone discussing it. And they say american cartoons are childish in general. /co/ likes to generalize all anime as being generic and shallow. Really it all boils down to one being different and someone not liking it because of that. So they come up with justifications for their xenophobia. Usually by stereotyping and generalizing what they don't like. "Oh all anime is shitty fanservice and narutu sand ninjas", "fuck off all amerikkkan cartoons are mindless brain numbing shit meant to keep kids occupied while their parents drink". Well guess what idiots, both countries have their own good and bad. You can't magically make an entire medium bad by talking about it's worst parts. If I judged /co/ by the plethora of shitty canadian flash cartoons and bad 80s shows I could easily make an argument for people to stop watching western cartoons. Grow up and give shit a chance. Hell give Panty and Stocking a chance, I did and didn't like it, you might, if you don't, that's great, don't get all high and mighty because you don't. Your subjective tastes don't make you better than anyone else. that's a lesson it seems nobody on /co/, /mu/, /v/, or /a/ can seem to learn.

    I don't mind that people don't think it's /co/-related

I mind people hating on it for all the wrong reasons

Has it ever occurred to the Panty and Stocking fans that people might not hate it because it is Japanese...but hate it because it is a bunch of shitty sex jokes and poop and toilet jokes. That people might just find it unfunny and not enjoyable, which is apparently the feeling in Japan according to the shows ratings and general reception.

/co/ loves several japanese shows we love Big O, Cowboy Bebop, a bunch of stuff. We don't have constant threads about them because they aren't /co/ related.

We latch on to the anti-Japan argument because it's easier to give examples of other good anime than to show /co/mrades are hypocritical for disliking poop and sex jokes while still loving South Park et al

I see Power Rangers threads in/co/, that is neither a cartoon nor comic, nor is it actually Western. But I'm completely fine with it here even if I don't participate in any of the threads. It be the same if we were talking about Tron, neither cartoon nor comic, but it feels just fine here. Digimon, well that's just anime, but I rarely see Digimon threads get picked apart by sagefags, and I'm fine with those threads.
But I'm totally not fine with the My Little Pony threads, what is so appealing about it? Still I don't bitch and whine about, I just find a thread I can enjoy.
