Chapter 1

Dusk descends upon the land of Equestria. From high atop her tower in Canterlot Castle, a lone pony gazes at the village below. As the western sky sets itself ablaze, she watches as her subjects begin to return to their homes. She watches a mother call the names of her two young foals, who still scamper and gallop through the streets, laughing and playing with one another in the twilight. Their faces turn to sudden sadness as their mother's call reaches their ears, and they resignedly trot back home where their warm beds await them. She watches as every door in the village gently closes. One by one, the lights in every house darken as their residents lay against their pillows and begin to drift into dreamland. Only the faintest red glow of the sun remains on the horizon. Instinctively, the watcher closes her eyes and concentrates, reaching out with her mind to the distant moon, commanding it to rise and cast all of Equestria under the shroud of night.

But it does not obey.

It doesn't obey her, anyway. The moon rises in the east within a few minutes as it always did, but it was not her who made it so. Not anymore.

The nightscape looks all too familiar to her. A glowing silvery moon serves as the sky's centerpiece, accented lovingly by the soft twinkle of the stars. The houses in the village below are cast in a gorgeous, ethereal light. At no other time does the magic and glory of Equestria seem so powerful. Yet no pony remains awake to see it.

The sight stirs an all too familiar pain. A single tear wells up in the pony's left eye. She quickly wipes it away with her hoof, darkening a small patch of her velvety, midnight blue coat. She breathes a heavy sigh, staring thoughtfully into the distance.

"Luna?" A voice from behind snaps her out of her melancholic reverie. Slowly, she turns to see her sister Celestia standing in an archway, looking as radiant and imposing as ever. Her long elegant horn and flowing rainbow mane ripple with magical energy, radiating a calming aura around her. "Is everything alright?"

"Of course, sister. Everything is fine." A small tremor in her voice betrays her lie. Celestia smiles and walks forward, one of her powerful, snow-white wings outstretched. Gently, she embraces Luna with it, pulling her close.

"Come on, now. What's really on your mind?"

"It's just..." Luna pauses for a moment, "Nothing's changed. One thousand years, and it's still exactly the same."

"I would never dream of altering your beautiful night in any way, my dear sister. I meant it when I said it was the most wondrous gift anyone had ever given Equestria all those years ago. I still mean it."

Luna feels the sincerity in Celestia's voice as strongly as she feels the magical warmth coming off her body. "And I know that," she replies. "But all those ponies down there don't know it. They never did. They'll never appreciate how I poured my heart and soul into crafting it just for them!" A plume of spite flares within her, a painful reminder of the reason she took up the mantle of Nightmare Moon in the first place.

Celestia looks down at her sister's face, now contorted into a painful scowl. Her soothing, melodious voice pours into the disgruntled mare's ears, "Luna, our subjects appreciate your night more than you know. They look upon its beauty just before they fall asleep. It puts them at ease and allows them to sleep peacefully, knowing they are safe in the night you created."

"Do they truly think that?"

"I know they do. I've always been jealous of that, you know. The ponies may laugh, work, and play in the daytime I created, but all too often they ignore the beauty of the sunlight to focus on their daily tasks. Yet there is not a single pony in Equestria who can ignore the serene sight of the land outside their windows bathed in shimmering moonlight."

The regal sisters sit in silence for a long moment, an unspoken understanding between them. Luna smiles up at her elder sister, about to speak, but it is Celestia who gets her words out first.

"I only wish I knew how to give your powers back. You deserve power over the night far more than I."

Luna's eyes shift nervously to the floor. Celestia removes her wing from her sister and takes a step back. For an instant, she towers imposingly over her, but then she kneels down and meets the dark pony's eyes with a level gaze. She slowly touches her horn to her sister's, a powerful gesture of openness among unicorns.

"I made so many mistakes back then, Luna. Above all, I want you to know that I'm not the same mare I was a millennium ago. You have every right to never forgive me for what I did, and if I could take it all back, I would. But I missed you so much. I want this to be a clean slate for us, a new start for all of Equestria, even. I just want you by my side. That's all."

"I... I want that too, sister," Luna stammers, barely able to contain her tears. In the blink of an eye, the two passionately embrace, both squeezing far too tight, seemingly making up for a thousand years of missed opportunities. It is a very, very long time before they separate.

The catharsis of the conversation hits Luna like a tidal wave. Feeling completely drained, she lets out a deep yawn. "I didn't realize until now how exhausted I was."

"It's alright, Luna. It's been a long day for the both of us. Go get some rest."

"Thank you, Celestia," Luna states, moving sleepily towards her freshly made bed, "It's good to be home."

"Good night, Luna."

Celestia stood and watched as Luna's head hit her pillow. She was asleep within seconds, a contented smile drawn across her face. It would be many more hours before Celestia herself could sleep, however, for she had important matters to attend to elsewhere in the castle. She grins slyly as she stealthily exits her sister's bedroom and begins to make her way down into the depths of Castle Canterlot.

Kind of. Much like how Mystery Inc isn't afraid to deviate from the old Scooby Formula, the new MLP doesn't give much of a fuck about its shitty predecessors either.

What I like most about it is that it pokes fun at the overly-saccharine of the previous series (mostly through Pinkie Pie and the other characters' reactions to her), and it doesn't shy away from using the female characters in physical comedy.

It's just quality cartooning.

Damn this latest episode was fun. I should've typed down my favourite bits while watching the episode; there were so many fun things, but now I can't remember most of them anymore so I could list them. Need to go rewatching.

The one part I was wondering was when Applejack misheard "help" as "kelp". I couldn't help but wonder if that was a reference to the seaponies and their annoying little song. I'm not certain if it was intended that way, probably not, but that's the way I interpreted it anyway.

I'm attempting a prolonged Rarity/Twilight fic

It entails Rarity being placed in charge of representing Ponyville in a fashion expo in Canterlot, and she brings Twilight along with her. While there, Rarity confronts her abusive parents who cant stand the sight of her and instead dote all their affection upon her two older sisters, one who is the premier designer in Canterlot (and secretly takes the credit for all the ensembles Rarity makes for the Gala) and another who has studied magic to the extent that she's one of Celestia's Royal guards

Essentially, I'm trying to grimdarken Rarity by making her manic desire for attention and recognition the result of the neglect of her stuck-up folks

It's about halfway done, so hopefully I'll post it tommorrow

"It's going to go just fine, Luna," I lie. "Trust me, you're not going to go to jail. Your freedom is my top priority."

She falls silent.

"Thank you, Mr. Wright," she starts. "No one's ever tried to help me as much as you are now. I can't thank you enough, really."

Great, I've given her all this faith in me when i don't even have that much faith in myself. Nice job, Phoenix. You better keep this poor horse... pony... out of jail.

She walks through into the courtroom, the proceedings are about to begin. I follow her, but I'm interrupted.

It's Maya, one of the few people that call me that. I haven't seen her in a while, I think the idea of defending a magical pony was too much for her. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't too much for me, too, though I've gotten used to it.

"Nick, I just wanted to say good luck today. I know I haven't been with you these past couple of days, and I'm sorry. But I'm going to make up for it! I'll be right there with you the entire time! Let's show them what we're made of!"

And now I have two people relying on me to win this tenuous case. Maybe I should just pack my bags and move. Take up a new identity. Maybe later; Right now the trial is about to start.

"This court is now in session for the trial of Princess Luna" boasts the judge, a large, powerful-looking man with a long beard.

To my side, Maya stands tense, and silent. Across from me stands Miles Edgeworth, an old friend who I frequently see as a rival in the courtroom, what with him being a prosecutor. He seems relaxed, he probably knows I don't have a case.

"The prosecution is ready, Your Honor."

"The defense is ready, Your Honor."

The judge gives Edgeworth the go ahead to begin his opening statement.

"According to the ancient legend, Tembelion is the Realm of Darkness... a sort of 'in between' place. It last appeared 500 years ago, and its ruler, Grogar, tried to conquer ponyland"

Tambelion comes back in sync with "the real world" every 500 years, and its ruler tries to take over. He leads a well equipped (but pretty dumb) army and has extremely powerful magic, but if you can reach the giant bell in his fortress and ring it, Tambelion goes away again for another 500 years.

"Thank you, Your Honor. The defendant, Princess Luna of Equestria, maintains power over the night, and is responsible for beginning and ending the night each day. On the morning of October 17th, she was arrested for refusing to lower the night to make way for the day her older sister, Princess Celestia, brings. Based on the fact that no one besides Princesses Luna and Celestia has the ability to control the night and day, the prosecution asserts that Princess Luna is, in fact, guilty."

Edgeworth isn't pulling any punches today, he's already called Luna out on being guilty. Still, I need to stay calm. Remember, Phoenix, Luna is definitely not guilty, you just have to prove that... somehow.

"The prosecution would like to call the defendant to the stand, please."

This is it, this is when it all begins... Luna takes the stand.

"Please state your name for the court," Edgeworth requests Luna.

"I-I'm Princess Luna, of Equestria." She doesn't sound confident.

"Princess Luna, please tell the court in your own words what happened on the morning of October 17th, that led to the thirty-six hours of night that was experienced."

Luna looks at me nervously. I nod my head, letting her know to tell the court exactly what she told me.

"I was outside the palace, looking into the night, as I often do. At around 4:00 AM, when we begin to prepare for the night to wane and the morning to start, my elder sister, Princess Celestia, came and offered to let me have a full day of night, just this once. She knows how much it means to me, and so I was really excited. I immediately accepted and used my magic to extend the night. A little while later, police helicoptors were surrounding me, and told me I was under arrest for misusing my powers. I was sure there was some misunderstanding, after all my sister is the one who is in charge of overseeing the entire day and night cycle, so I went with them quietly."

Edgeworth smirks to himself, as though he can't believe how easy this case is going to be.

"So... you admit that you deliberately extended the night?"

"Well... y-yes, I did. But I wasn't doing anything I wasn't allowed to, my sister gave me permission to do it!"

"Do you have any proof of this?"

For context, in case you didn't know, I'm the first one to do the pony drinking game, back when we only had 2 episodes. The playtester, you could say? I also came up with a good chunk of the rules, though none of us knew how bad Episode 4 would change it. Things we thought would be rare, like Twilight teleporting, are spammed all over the fucking place in 4, and things we thought would be more common weren't in it.
