So I realized why I like this show so much: they're actually allowing it to be a cartoon.

Girls' cartoons are notorious for being treacly sweet and never letting any kind of physical harm come to the characters, slapstick or otherwise. In this show, they actually remembered the whole concept of squash and stretch, and the fact that the characters are girls doesn't make them immune to physical comedy - poor Applejack gets the crap beat out of her during the catapult scene, for instance, plus all the ponies barfing it up at the infirmary.

They also aren't afraid to highlight the absurdity of things, like how the whole trophy dragging scene kind of lampshaded the ponies' lack of hands (and made me laugh audibly.) Also: the menacing of the bunnies.

This is the first girls' cartoon I think I've ever seen that isn't utterly insulting to its target demographic, and remembers that girls like craziness just as much as boys do.

I have to say, this show feels a lot like just your average 'young teens' targeted kids show with a lot of sappy "FRIENDS ARE AWESOME" tacked on top for good measure. Hell, at times the cutesy fluffiness of it is a bit...unfitting. Like it was written as a straight up comedy/drama cartoon show and then converted to FRIENDSHIP IS AWESOME at the last moment.

Go watch a metric ton of animé out of the shoujo (for GURLS) genre and then whine about it. Hell, watch Sailor Moon. It might be a cartoon made for young girls, but it's still chock full of fairly mature comedy in places, decent characterisation, engaging moral and emotional turmoil, some fairly 'mature' conflict topics and a whole fucking ton of stuff aimed at much older audiences.

Nobody's telling you to jerk off to the frilly bits. Just enjoy what's actually good about the show.
