Like Equius, Sollux is a quiet one. But he's a nerd, always dressed in baggy heavy clothes, tall, lanky, he's got the top grades in everything, he's the kid talking Algebra in 5th grade, but he's always quiet, sometimes talking to himself, and sometimes pulls out something weird he's working on and has that a dad that's not very smart, probably has a job involving heavy lifting or something with limited brainpower, and is mostly the kind of guy that thinks bonding with his son means watching a game of FOOTBALL rather than talking about the newest SVN release of some obscure program.

I think part of the problem is that there's two phenomenae at work here. One is the Scratch utilized by the kids to drive Lord English from his hiding place. The other is the GREAT UNDOING that sits at the far end of their timelines, beyond which temporal snooping is unable to penetrate. The former is a game mechanic, well-recognized and understood at least from the trolls' perspective, which is only troublesome because it was precisely calibrated to create the results seen. The latter is both more mysterious and the Bigger Deal.

It's rougher, infinitely so. But it has tons of charm. Hussie was able to develop the characters without a single line of dialogue. I know them just as well as I know the Kids.

Also, some/most of the commands are kinda stupid, but hey, the story is lighthearted.

Don't take the final battle seriously and just keep laughing at it. Yes, it is supposed to be that long and goddamn epic. You will never look at snoop dogg, candy corn, and electric fans the same ever again, trust me.

I had such a hard fucking time trying to read the trolls' conversations with each other and it was a sheer pain in the ass with all kinds of irrelevant information (did we seriously need to know about troll relationships, really), not to mention that their typing quirks can get a little more than annoying to decipher.

On top of that, their conversations were often excessively long, and in truth I skimmed over half of them because of the combination of annoying factors exceeded my tolerance threshold.

A summarization, preferably in recap form would be best. Yes, I skipped over a few things because of how retardedly difficult it was to follow. Don't tell me to "go back and read them" because I really couldn't give two shits about the four quadrants of troll relationships or whatever the fuck that whole chapter wasted time explaining. Which means I probably missed some subtle information that's key to knowing exactly what point of time we're at and knowing exactly what's going on.

I've read the whole thing so far. I didn't skip pages because I WANTED to, but rather because of the sheer difficulty in actually reading those pages and deciphering WHEN this conversation happened, WHAT was said, the trolls' typing quirks are a huge pain in the ass to read from time-to-time, and finally, WHY those conversations were significant in the grander scheme of things. It'd be like opening up an old X-Men comic, only to find that some kid scribbled over nine panels with black crayon. Or having to skip pages because they somehow got glued together, and trying to take them apart would ruin all the pages.

Hey, some anon here who's never read Homestuck. I used to feel indifferent about these threads, then there was a short period when the frontpage was filled with them and I got sick of seeing grey people with horns, but now things seem to be under control and I don't have a problem with Homestuck threads anymore.

I'm kind of curious about how you guys can hold 24/7 conversations about this stuff and post the weirdest images that seem to have a lot of meaning to you but make me just go "uhh, wut?". And now I got kinda curious about this "if you have trouble comprehending the comic then gtfo" conversation in this thread.

If I wanted to check out Homestuck myself and see what all the fuss is about, how much sparetime would I have to reserve for reading it up to the point where you guys are now? Is it possible to read through everything in a few hours or is it a longer task? Is the comic too big and complicated to jump in, or am I missing out on something cool if I don't read it?

hivebent was originally planned to be something like half as long as it ended up being, Hussie attempted to use it as an emergency romance ghetto, after seeing the growth of shipping in the fandom. it's actually kind of worked (in killing shipping of the kids) but he probably has to be regretting it now, or at least regretting egging the shippers on as much as he did (and the absurdly massive volume of troll romance fanwork that has been generated).

Just go through each page and look at the content, and even if you're confused about a new development, as long as you read it all and progress on it'll almost always become transparent with future developments.

If you're dedicated to it, it'd probably take 5-6 hours solid browsing to get through the backlog, although that may be a number I pulled out of thin air. I seem to remember some other new anon giving that number as how long he spent catching up. Depends how long you spend fiddling with the flash games and music I guess.

Lets be civil here, some people have an inherent dislike of the trolls and do not find any joy in reading up their character conversations which did move the plot along ever so slightly.

Some people jumped on the troll bandwagon along with all the shipping and inter character drama.

Its point of discourse that should not affect the enjoyment of the package as a whole, and besides we are now getting the best of both worlds, kids and trolls.

Think of it like this. Homestuck is a puzzle. One of those cardboard ones with a picture of a cat or something.

You start out with a couple of edge pieces and some middle bits that fit together, then you get some bits that don't quite fit but look like part of the same thing, and eventually you get enough bits to connect them all and make the cats paw or something.

Then you get a piece that is completely different. It doesn't even look like something from this planet, let alone part of a cat. People like >>20814405 look at this piece and go "What the hell is this" and then throw the puzzle piece away. Then they get another piece that is equally out of place, and throw that out as well.
Eventually they get some pieces that fit with the rest of the pieces they kept, and by the end they have a picture with a big hole in it. And then they say, "This puzzle sucks, there's not enough pieces in it!"

If they had kept all the pieces that didn't make any sense before, they would have realized that they all fit into that hole to form some horses galloping in the background or some shit.

Some of the trolls are pretty cool. So far it's been implied that Karkat, Vriska, and Terezi are the "main trolls" with Kanaya, Aradia, and Nepeta being the secondary ones. With Nepeta being an interesting entity herself (what with being troll royalty and all), she doesn't necessarily seem to be a driving force for the trolls.

Some of the other trolls though...ugh. I don't like Feferi's design at all. She looks positively disgusting. Gamzee is dumb and almost completely irrelevant to anything that happens ever, seemingly only in to fill the "dumb stoner" role that seems necessary in almost any media since 1999, and Eridan is nothing but a giant fucking pussy. Karkat may be a bastard compared to some, but dammit, at least his character is enjoyable and decently well-developed.

Couple that with an incessant burning need to see what the fuck happened at the end of [S]Descend, and you can see why some people feel that way. The story took a massive detour at that point, and then near the end it was revealed that it wasn't a detour at all, which left people who don't like the trolls much scratching their heads.

Hussie took the story in a weird direction and it was polarizing.

Nepeta will probably wind up being either very important or at least a prominently featured side-character, since it's confirmed that she's been talking to Jade. And by important I mean adorable.

I thought I made that pretty clear with the puzzle metaphor that you just have to persevere and read through the stuff you don't understand, even if it seems irrelevant, because it will suddenly become clear as Hussie dishes out more exposition.

Note that this is true for both understanding the events in Hivebent and the events of [S]Descend, as well as all the weird puzzle shit in PS and (eventually) all the weird time shit in HS.

It's not like you have to do an analysis of the pesterlogs to get an idea of what's being said. When he was first named and having long pesterlogs, I found Sollux's typing style impenetrable and largely skimmed over what he said, but I could still pull the basic ideas out of it (Fight with Karkat, talk about Red team, etc).
