I'm fine with "grimdark" when it's intentionally a completely different version of an existing universe, those are interesting. I only really have a problem when one takes an existing, happy, series, then goes"sudennly, blood, guts, sex, and everyone dies forever", and thinks it fits into the existing story.

I think the idea is to substitute well-done storytelling with cheap emotional impact. Think of all the murder mystery type shows on television, and how popular they are - rather than trying to write something engaging, every single show starts with a dead body and a grieving family. Instant drama. We then equate that 'drama' as somehow DEEP and meaningful.

Though the comic OP posted is still pretty awesome, even if it doesn't make sense within the context of what Mario usually is like.
