My first humans looked like crap and I kept reading through Hogarth books hoping something would take.

In the end I realized that art books are different from other books. You don't just read them once and take in everything. You read a little, try to practice, fail a lot, learn a small amount, read again, notice things you didn't notice the last time, practice some more, do a little better, and so on. You'll probably read the book dozens of times and keep learning more and more from it.
