I thought this episode was nowhere near as good as the finales for Season 1 and Season 2 (I actually loved the Season 2 finale which may put me in somewhat of a minority).

One of the main problems, as others have stated, is that it felt far too rushed. The whole switching cutie-marks plot (lol pun...) suddenly occurred with no build-up and was cleared up almost as quickly. The same can be said for the alicorn thing.

We didn't get to see the characters deal with any of the tension caused by the events, and that's the main appeal of the show, the way in which the characters interact with each other and deal with the various challenges presented to them.

While I did enjoy (some of) the songs, I felt there were too many of them and it actually detracted from the overall storytelling. Just as icing is often the best part of a cake, very few people would want to eat a cake made entirely of icing.

However, this doesn't mean I'm going to stop being a fan of the show or anything like that. It's inevitable that I'm going to like some episodes more than others, and I'm sure that there are people who have hated some of the episodes that I thought were the strongest in the entire series.

Even though I wasn't that impressed, it's also quite possible that my opinion could change with Season 4. We may have just watched the first episode of an epic 3 parter.

It was a bad episode. There were too many songs and the princess alicorn element felt slapped on and unnecessary. And if this was due to Hasbro's meddling, I fear for this show.
This is the ideal way a business can support creative people....

Say no to the ideas of good creative people.
Don't tell the creatives how to do their jobs.
FIM worked because Faust was constrained. She wanted multi-episode story arcs and Hasbro told her no. That was a good thing. People were willing to push back on some of George Lucus' ideas when the original Star Wars trilogy was made. Restrained genius is often the best kind.

Secondly, it didn't feel like Hasbro interfered heavily with the particulars of the show contents. And it worked, even when it came to selling toys. Sonic Rainboom worked just fine as a vehicle for selling the Glimmer Wing ponies. Nobody had to give in to pressure to make Rarity's wings permanent or affix them to Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.
Today's episode was no Sonic Rainboom. It was an episode that threw the balance of the main characters completely out the window in the name of selling a toy. It felt like a lot of heavy interference on show particulars by Hasbro. If things continue in this direction, it will drag the quality down to the same level as every other toy-selling show for little girls.
And it probably will.

But I suppose good things like this can't last forever. As John DeLancie once said in a past role, "All good things must come to an end".

You know, I don't think I really agree that this episode would have improved if it was a two-parter. Or hell even a three-parter as some have been saying.

Sure it would have reduced how cramped the songs felt like and hopefully slow the fucked-up pacing but all in all we still get some pretty terrible reasons why she's now Princess Sparkle. Nothing could have prepared me for that.

Good idea, nothing there looks a bit immodest for a Princess. Though i guess someone like Celestia would really be able to dress however she liked and it'd be accepted.
