As I understand it, union laws in America regarding animated shows require that paychecks are raised after the third season, the thinking being that if you get to a fourth season, you're really successful, and the cast and crew should be payed accordingly.
Most of the time the studio doesn't want to raise the budget, so you have to be really successful to make to season 4, and even if you do, sometimes a few dirty tricks will be pulled to make it a "new" show. Beast Wars did it with Beast Machines, Transformers Animated re-focused their season 3 finale to make it look like a series finale, and Transformers Prime is set to become "Beast Hunters" in its fourth season (to use other Hasbro-owned shows as examples).
So this theory has credence. FiM was probably planned to be a three season show because that's just what cartoons do. It's how the industry works. The show is super popular however, so they're extending it, but they need a sort of "soft reboot" as an excuse to potentially change the name of the show. Twilight is a princess, it looks like she might like in Canterlot now, going forward the show has a slightly new direction-- all of these things point towards a "new show" concept, like Hasbro has done before.
Too much was crammed into this finale. It didn't bother me too much, since I've seen much worse examples of that (Legend of Korra...), and I didn't have anything invested in this finale. But something has got to explain why this episode wasn't at least a two-parter, and I think this is a good a theory as any.

This episode was a hot mess. Well, maybe not so hot, but still. I'm not sure what anyone 'trusted' MA Larson to do, but it seems like at least a number of them got it. I'll say for myself - they took another unwieldy, difficult plot twist (alicorn twilight) and tried to do in half the time what they did during season 2's finale, and it didn't work out so well.
There was plenty to like about it - the music especially was well-done - but as the musical sequences piled atop one another, the plot got left behind as the episode cannon-balled towards Hasbro's new product line. The plot itself was paper thing - a shame, considering that the idea of exchanged cutiemarks was so promising.
This certainly isn't the end of the fandom, but I think it's worth standing back and asking some hard questions about the creative directions the show's going in. There have been many people celebrating this episode, and that in fact, as Twilight/MA Larson has claimed, it will all be fine. But have we already forgotten Lauren Faust's tweet about her plans for Twilight being meaningless now? The foundation of the show - that a little girl can be whatever she wants - apparently doesn't apply anymore, for - in Megan McCarthy's words - "every little girl wants to be a princess". And so it is with Twilight Sparkle, the bookish, awkward purple unicorn we've traveled three seasons with. A coming of age story doesn't sell toys, but crowns and brushable hair do.

I think we should all step back and remember how well this series does compared to the older generations and compared to other media for girls. I remember in G3, the ponies barely had their own personalities outside of of really slight quirks, and all moved the same, emoted the same, everything. Even something miniscule, like that "Huh, well how about that" expression Rainbow Dash made this episode when she tried out weather control is character acting you'd only rarely see in the old stuff.

The show is kind of becoming a victim of its success. Pre-G4 I don't think anyone really gave a shit about the franchise, including at Hasbro, which is why Faust and everyone was given so much freedom to make the show however they wanted (for the most part.)

However, now that it's gotten so much attention Hasbro can't resist having a product tie-in every 5 minutes. Which the writers can work around in small amounts, but when marketing the toys requires completely upending the basics of how their world functions (again) the writers are going to have a hard time doing much with that. Which I think we saw.

Bottom line, since Faust left it seems like Hasbro has been more and more micromanaging the show. I think we'll keep getting some very good episodes in spite of this, but in the long term I think the problem will just keep getting worse unfortunately.

The problem isn't Twilight becoming godly. You can have character flaws and development when faced with new situations and responsibilities.

The problem I have is the lack of any flaws in her character these last two episodes. They got rid of her OCD, and now in this one she takes her friends getting mentally destroyed in stride with a song and dance routine, and then flies off into the sunset hours after sprouting wings.

She can be an alicorn. Nothing wrong with becoming a demigod, really. The show won't ever address the ramifications of outliving her friends. Becoming royalty and effectively one of the 3 (if Cadance rules the Crystal Empire as a state or something) monarches of the country? Having your friends bow to you? That ruins the entire group dynamic. Twilight was already established as a capable spellcaster who could play MacGuffin whenever a plot required spells. Making her an alicorn in a vacuum just means more of that.

Removing her character flaws and making her fundamentally in the eyes of everyone entirely beyond the rest of the cast? Character destroying. Why does Applejack get no love? Because her character is done. And the way Twilicorn is presented, and just the way Celestia says it, her friendship studies are done. She won. Game over. Character complete. So you can go shove her OCD and stress issues next to Applejack being too bullheaded and hardworking because those traits of realistic characters have just set sail apparently.

Well... I believed in M.A Larson. I truly, truly wanted to believe this could be done in a satisfying way. But this was... Not good. Not good at all.

I just wonder what they were thinking, making this a 22-minute episode. Even if they had made this a two-parter I feel the time might not have been enough to pull this off in a good way, and making it a single episode was pretty much the most nonsensical decision imaginable.

In my opinion, nothing in this episode worked. The plot didn't really go anywhere as the time constraint forced a super quick resolution to the problem. That was probably also the main reason for why there were so many songs. They simply had to save time as going for a "montage" approach is quicker than explaining the story through dialogue and such.

The explanation for why Twilicorn happened in the first place was pretty nonsensical and would have required a LOT more exposure. Her reaction to suddenly being a princess was not properly explored due to time constraints, her friends' reactions were not properly explored due to time constraints, what being a princess means for her future was not properly explored due to time constraints etc.

See a theme here? Time constraints! Why did they make this a 22-minute episode!? This could have worked as a two-parter, but as a single episode it is simply a rushed mess of a story. No amount of songs or funny moments can save an episode when the very core of the story is so gravely flawed.

I know the season 4 premiere is going to be a two-parter that will follow up on this one, but that still doesn't change the fact that this episode on its own is a mess.

I truly hate to say it, but it was worse than I expected.

Twilight's outcast status was the perfect way to start the series. She wasn't just a social outcast, she was an outcast to the whole bright and girly universe that she lived in.

She was nerdy, she was sarcastic, she was impatient and had issues with socializing.

She was the perfect opposite of the world the show has painted. Twilight has ascended her initial problems. She got interested in stuff other than books from her friends, grew patient, softer and learned to be a friend and a leader.

Where can she go from here? She has become the show. She has fulfilled her destiny.

Maybe it's time she shares her lessons of friendship with others? Maybe her and her friends need to travel Equestria and spread the show's message?

Show is on the brink. While S3 was mostly good, it showed signs that it could be headed into a really bad or really good direction. Show is great and is definitely a good mark on modern cartoons. A flawed, flawed show but a great show nonetheless. And it's a great insight into how shows work, how fandoms form and what they take away from shows, and how people react because someone wants to watch a bunch of horses do stuff.
