But that raises many questions. How did Somber come to power? How did he bypass the defenses last time?

Again there seems to be a story this season and they have a chance to further use him.

Maybe there isn't one, maybe everything is something else but that picture of Trixie, how she defeats Twilight, that abandoned Ponyville pictures and so on seem kinda strange.

I don't know all we can do is wait but it's just that it feels like there's something more, something deeper.

I'm probably just getting my hopes up for nothing, you know, >Hasbro, show for little girls, Lauren not working anymore on the show, but it's fun to speculate and hope is never bad right?

That is a similar situation to the the whole setup with Discord, though. We got about 30 seconds of related backstory on him. Enough to make us really curious, but as of yet, nothing shown regarding his original appearance, rise or banishment.

i gave it a 7 because i thought it was good, not great.

A 5 would be average and a show i'd probably only watch while bored (but i would watch it)

while anything less i would probably turn off, with the time it takes me to turn off the show being smaller as the numbers decrease (4, I never watch another episode after finishing it, 3. I turn it off after 15 minutes, 2. i turn it off after 5 minutes, 1. i turn it off after 1 minute. 0. absolutely atrocious do not even start)

Honestly, what I was mostly worried about was that they WOULD give him some characterization and motivation, which would contrast with his total "EDGY GRIMDARK" design. The fact that he barely did anything kind of justified his unquestionably even look, because that simply wasn't important. The episodes weren't REALLY about them having to team up to defeat some supervillain, it was more about Twilight having to come into her own, and overcome her own obstacles. King Sombra and the Crystal Empire stuff was window dressing around that.

She lives in a library. She is constantly studying. Her "element" is magic, so she has "raw ability" which she is constantly practicing even at the expense of making friends.

She is often uptight, sometimes socially stunted (in the sleepover episode), a little anti-social, and quick to stress. She is also a little self-centered. But she's also a born leader and tries to see things from multiple angles.

+ Cool new environments
+ Concept of a whole other civilization was good
+ Worldbuilding
* Didn't really need 3 sonds
- Villan wasn't actually built upon
- No real reason to dislike villan

First episode:
+ Twilight being autistic
+ Neato effects
+ Celestia
+ Pinkie

- Terrible pacing
- Character interaction seems rushed and the background isn't really expanded
- Was a total clusterfuck

Okay, so have we speculated on the scenes from the commercials?

There's the scene where Sweetie is "so excited". That's probably from "One Bad Apple", when they hear about the apple cousin.

Scootaloo on her scooter could be anything, though Sleepless in Ponyville seems to be Scootacentric.

The background from the scene where Twilight shrinks AJ and Rarity suggests it's from Magic Duel. Looks like the duel is going to be a showmanship thing and not a straight up fight based on that, since there'd be no point in shrinking your own friends in a fight.

The mass of Pinkies is obviously from Too Many Pinkie Pies.

"Team of Fearless Fliers" is from Wonderbolt Academy.

The last scene with Twilight performing magic also looks like it's probably from Magic Duel.

The remaining scene from the other commercial where Pinkie messes up her face lacks context or a background, so it could go pretty much anywhere.

Ads are set times that the writers have to work with. We expected 44 minutes of pone and that's what we got.

Not really good, but doesn't really fuck anything up big time. Liked the character interaction at parts.
Second episode: 3/10
Wow, been a while since I've seen the show fuck up this bad. Almost every aspect of this part was stale and revealed something about how it was going to be resolved immediately. The character interaction, again, was good, but was absolutely crushed under thick walls of shitty voice acting and cheap plot points. The resolution was unsatisfying as hell, Cadance and SA are left undeveloped and boring, the villain remains the worst character on the show yet, and to add salt to the wound, they have to break out into unwarranted song at the end.

If they keep this kind of shit up, Season 3 is going to be a disaster.

Yes, apparently that was they were aiming for in these episodes, but that's not an excuse for a shitty villain with awful design.

Also if that's actually the case, then King Sombra didn't need to be a character at all, or at the very least not have returned. The curse and threat should have been the shadows/gray crystals trying to consume the Crystal Kingdom once again and not a King Sombra coming back, so the focus on Twilight could have been more prominent.

You'd think that a writer who gets paid for this could have seen King Sombra wasn't a good idea for what they were trying to do with these episodes.

Most of the bad points you listed for the second episode are present in most of the second and some of the first season.

I can see where you're coming from but the resolutions for problems hasn't been that complex or well thought out ever - though I do think that the 'good' side should come closer to losing and actually struggle more maybe. The co-out endings could really be better.

But, the opening episodes for every season had these exact issues, to the letter. I don't really think we can judge the season based on these episodes.

At the very least the character interaction seems to be improving from S2, if they keep that up, it could turn out very well - however these issues should hopefully be restricted to forced, mandatory 2 part adventure episodes that call for complex shit.

I did think characterization was good in the episodes, and if that keeps up, we can hope for decent episodes - though we simply can't accurately tell the quality of episodes until a normal episode airs.

So just saying that the elements are going to fix the problem (like in most other similar episodes), it's worse to say that something new can fix it, and then to have about 20 minutes of characters trying to find it.

The whole concept is no worse from a literature perspective than the elements.

Almost every single other threat against Equestria/ponykind has been solved with the elements, yes, but every single of those times Celestia outright stated that they needed the elements.

She didn't this time, so there was no reason to even consider that.

Also, the reason there was no buildup is because the central point focused on the reveal of the concept, they didn't know about the crystal heart - that basically hinged the episode and presented most of the struggle for the entire second episode.

I didn't really care much for the pilot either. First thing I watched and it didn't really grab my interest. Then a few months later I watched the next couple episodes and then became an mlp.

The teasers for the episodes of this season look like they ought to be super. Can't wait to see the regular episodes for this season.
