"But it ain't fair sis!" Apple Bloom cried. She was on the verge of tears.
Applejack was stern but comforting, putting an arm over her little sister. "Now don't you go blubbering on me, Apple Bloom. You knew this was coming."
"But why does it have to be now?"
Applejack looked her sister in the eyes. "It's just the way things work. We've put it off for as long as we can, now all we can do is be there for her the end. We've got to be strong for her. Promise me you'll be strong for her, alright?"
Apple Bloom buried her face into Applejack's neck. She cried out a long, heaving sob into her sister's coat. "I just don't want to say goodbye!"
"Now, now, half-pint. Don't be crying on my account", Granny Smith said tenderly, limping into the room quietly. The sisters hadn't even noticed her approach, nor that of their brother behind her.
"Granny!" Apple Bloom cried. She ran over and hugged her grandmother, continuing to cry despite her desire not to. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!" Applejack remained where she was, trying her best to maintain a strong front. Inside, the decision was still eating her up.
"Don't be sorry, Apple Bloom", Granny Smith said as she nuzzled into the little pony's mane. "I've known this was coming for quite some time." Her eyes grew hazy, like they were gazing off into something no-one else could see. "It's time for me to go see the rest of my family."
"Granny", Big Macintosh said, his own eyes red and wet. "The truck is here." Outside, a large industrial cart with a picture of glue on the side waited, the ponies attached looking forward with a solemn look.
"Well then, I guess it's time for me to be going." |
