>>306487 >thinks about the nature of characters and charactization, and the hatred of OCs Some of it is justified, in a weird way. Typically, because OCs, self-inserts, and the like are rife with people doing it poorly
Their OC is wish fulfillment, rife with cliche or nonsense, because their goal from the outset was to please themselves and they had no talent or awareness on how to do so in a manner that would please anyone else. Rightfully, people drawing attention to these OCs are hated.
Self-inserts are largely the same thing. By posting a lot of the fanfics online, you're inviting others to read it. Personal wishfulfillment will often suffer from the same thing the OCs do, and rightfully, these stories anger the readers who had to spend the time to read the fic to realize that the author did nothing to make it enjoyable for them.
This is the internet, though, and people often over react. Because most OCs are bad, they come to the conclusion that ALL OCs are terrible as a heuristic to save time, or to merely vent their rage for past sins DO HO HO HO. Because most self-inserts are done without awareness or talent, they suffer the same fate.
This means, though, that any OC or presumed self-insert has a mountain to climb in order to get past these natural knee-jerk reactions and convince the audience that they are worth the time investment for enjoying. |
