Attention 4chan extension/user script/archive developers: Some time in the next few days, we'll be rolling out a complete HTML rewrite of the imageboards.
The design will remain the same, but the underlying HTML/CSS is completely new, and validates HTML5/CSS3 (with some tweaks to account for cross-browser compatibility).

As a regular user, these changes should not affect you. You will need to update your 4chan browser extensions/user scripts when their maintainer updates them to be compatible with the changes.
The official 4chan Chrome extension will be ready to go when the updates happen, and 4chan X should be ready soon. We'll post more details on the day of the migration!

That's because she was flat. Her defining characteristics are: she was a great foalsitter to Twilight (which we just get told), she can make people love each other or something with magic (which we get shown once), and that she loves Shining Armor (a character that suddenly appears at the start of the episodes).

She doesn't change, she doesn't grow. We don't even really know her. She's a pink alicorn they can sell toys with and not much else. And the way she's been written so far, I don't know if she'll ever be anything more than that.

Which fucking sucks because I want Shining Armor to get more fleshed out because he's at least related to a protagonist.

one last thought

I had no idea everyone was so down on the 'power of love' ending
it wasn't just the quickness or suddenness (other villain episodes had this)
it was the idea that love - the theme, subject, and motif of the episode, which had been built up through the entire two-part plot, focused on, and even given as the explicit diegetic source of power that the changelings were using throughout the episode - could be the same force to drive them back
somehow this struck such a sour note with so many on mlpg that not only did it "ruin the whole episode" for many, it was even called "the lowest point the series has ever hit by a long way"

I could say something about that and what it suggests
but it would be awfully arrogant and presumptuous

but I'd just suggest you guys are being too harsh on that one aspect
it is still a kid's cartoon
even if the notion strikes you as corny it really does fit

It IS a kid's show and while it often goes above and beyond the dull standard set for that medium, entertaining audiences beyond its core demographic, you can't begrudge it for occasionally showing its colors
And more specifically, neither can you paint in such broad and inaccurate strokes as to claim that it's "failed at Faust's vision" because it spoke of the notion of love as a powerful force

You act like the power of love is not only something adults don't believe in, it's a concept they can't even entertain in fiction

The problem is that the resolution of the entire crisis lasted about 12 seconds and could not possibly have been foreseen before that, because all of the elements it relied on were pulled out of the air in order to do it.

What put me off was the shoehorned flat characters which in an ordinary "just for kids" show would have fit right in. But the main cast of FiM are actually rather deep for kids show cartoon characters. So the flatness and abrupt introduction of such plot-important characters is rather jarring. You can get away with flat one-shot antagonists, but not with flat one-shot protagonists.

Other than being flat out told (or sung as the case may be) that these characters were Important and Loved by the characters we actually care about, I feel nothing for Cadence and Shining Armor. Their love, which was so powerful it swept the entire Changeling army and Chrysalis out of Canterlot, meant absolutely nothing to me. I didn't see them fall in love. I didn't see them even meet. I didn't even see them before I was told that they were in love! So the power of their love just has to be accepted at face value, which really cheapens the effect as well as the lesson as a whole.

NMM's fight was corny, but that was okay because the entire two-parter was a journey of self-discovery and a quest to find the EoH, leading up to them discovering themselves and finding the EoH. Not a hugely complex story, but one that makes sense. Discord's defeat came at the end of a struggle to maintain who they were so they could use the EoH - they recovered, and used the EoH. Again, not full of twists, but a perfectly servicable storyline.

Chrysalis' defeat came out of nowhere. The actions of Celestia and the main six were utterly useless and achieved nothing, and the actual "defeat" was Twilight sneaking off and freeing candyass (even though there were guards guarding them all a few moments ago) and then Candyass and shiny arm exploding, something which had never so much as been hinted at being a possibility before. There was no buildup to it, which is the entire problem - if there's no buildup, it comes out of nowhere. If the resolution to something comes out of nowhere, that's shitty.

For people getting confused as to why the lovesplosion didnt just make Chrysalis super powerful, it's because the Queen obviously needed to hypnotize him into loving Her. Cadence broke that down and focused his love on herself instead.

No, my intention was to show that sometimes corny ideals may spring up (no less so than pinkie laughing her fear of spooky monsters away) but those have to be taken in stride when you consider the core audience - not that they're obstacles to suffer through or handwaved away, which is what the "just a kid's show" usually implies

I think the ending was rather quick and not totally satisfying but I felt that way about most other 'boss fight' endings and I definitely disagree that it was "out of nowhere"
the entire plot, though perhaps not to its credit, was built around SA and Cadence, and the finale is a result of that
