I never cared for "fun with a pencil" tbh, some parts of it are really good, but a lot of it is pretty childish.

However his other books are really good, and getting the ball and plane method down will really help you get the proportions of the head correct.

I don't want to seem pushy or anything though. It's just if someone's taken the trouble to start drawing I generally think they must have enough interest in it that they'd get something good out of it, but when you first start it can be really discouraging so I just try to give a little motivation to people.

The best thing you can do is keep it fun, if something is frustrating you it's better to ignore it and come back later than keep going. (Also so often you'll come back later and get it first or second time, no promises but it's happened with me a lot)

Well, before you go making international calls, I'd try the US consulate or embassy in whatever country you live, first. They'll probably be able to give you an official line.

If you had to call Washington, try the State Department. The foreign intelligence agencies (the CIA, NSA, and the various military intelligence branches) were the ones who supposedly did it all (nothing I saw ever indicated that the FBI was torturing domestic terror suspects, though they did plenty of other stupid shit). You could try calling them but I have no idea how much they would give you. State Department is your best bet.

This is a pretty interesting thought about which group helps aspirants reach success the most. Definitely not anime because they just have crazily low standards so there's no need to improve. People who want to draw realistically tend to suffer because what they're trying to obtain is so much more difficult and requires a lot more focus (so a lot tend to end up doing something else).

Furries seem to have a strong community, and if you've ever wanted to draw something animal related like fur or a snout (You know, cause you want to draw a dog or something, not a half dog thing fucking a half cat thing) there are shit tons of guides for it. Even weirder fetishes tend to just have incredibly low standards because they're just glad someone's doing something.

I reckon ponies would be pretty high on a aspirant to success level, considering the amount of guides and how simple it actually is.

Provided you're not asking about something actually secret (but that's the issue, of course, though the Bush Administration never really denied torturing people -- they just changed the definition of torture), state and federal agencies have to give you info. 1) I doubt they're holding much info back right now. I suspect they believe it's not something that needs to be adressed, since the US has signed and ratified (and is thus subject to) the relevant UN conventions on torture. Like I said, the position of the previous administration was that they were never in violation of those treaties, because they believed (or were willing to argue) that waterboarding/sleep deprivation/whatever weren't "really" torture. That was dumb for a variety of reasons, but it was what they argued.
2) For the current administration, opening up about what happened would expose a lot of the CIA to legal action. Even if the Department of Justice didn't prosecute anyone associated with so-called "enhanced interrogation," admitting what happened and identifying who did it would mean that those people could be sued under US Law (there's a federal law called the "protection from torture" act or some such that allows individuals to sue their torturers. The Supreme Court just made a ruling on it saying that only _individuals_ can be sued, not groups. The ruling had to do with suing the Palestinian Liberation Organization, but the connection to the CIA or federal government is obvious. The last thing the government wants is for prisoners in Guantanamo suing the unnamed CIA agents and for the federal court system to start subpoenaing the CIA for their agents' names. The result would be nil but it would be a huge loss of face.

So, you know, it's better to just be tight-lipped about it and just say that policy has changed and the CIA no longer tortures people.

Those shaky lines, are you drawing from your wrist? any line over an inch generally should be drawn from the elbow or shoulder, you'll get a smoother line.

Get used to using a sketch layer then a proper layer, generally outline stuff in the sketch layer then in the proper layer use the sketch as a guide, remember ctrl+z is every digital artists best friend.

Take your time, observe how things actually look, try to judge distances accurately.

Ah, drawing from the shoulder can take a little getting used to. The basic idea is sound though, the arc of your shoulder is many times greater than your wrist, so taking a segment from that circle will yield a much less curved line.

One thing you might want to try is point to point drawing (video related). It's literally as it sounds, where you want a line you mark it's start and end and then draw the line between them. For example if you want a box, mark the four corners of the box and then join them up.
