A codec is basically the algorithm (process) that encodes and decodes video and audio into a form that can be more easily transported. This is important because uncompressed video and audio is really, really big, so a better codec can result in smaller files with better quality. This is awesome for obvious reasons. "mkv" is a container format that can hold video and audio encoded using various codecs - avi is the same, except it's not as good at it, and doesn't support as good codecs nor do it as efficiently.
tl;dr, mkv lets you have better looking video AND smaller files. |
