I was really rather disappointed by this episode, it had such a lot going for it, but it felt a little rushed & a little disjointed.
A lot of things like AK Yearling being daring do's secret identity. How can it be a secret when she just changes into her Indiana Jones outfit infront of 6 random ponies she's just met.
Also, The fact that AJ, Rarity, Pinkie & fluttershy were in this episode. For most of it they just kinda stood awkwardly in the background before recreating the end of equestria girls with the ancient magical ring (Speaking of the ring, it holds buildings up & affects global warming??)
It's also very obvious that this episode was originally intended to be aired before Twilight became an alicorn. She could of been so useful if she used her wings now & again (made even more obvious with the whole "You can flap too you know" exchange between RD & DD).
Also, RD felt very out of character this episode . . . Just because she likes the books a lot doesn't mean her entire personality changes :/ I totally get what they were getting at i.e. RD this episode = Bronies. And while that was funny & clever thing to throw in, it completely sodomised Rd's personality.
Furthermore, the ways in which the plot moved forward were weak, The random party, the other 5 just happening to find RD in the middle of a big jungle, the rings making things collapse etc.
I am however, a big fan of all the references they put in, from LOTR, Indiana Jones (was fully expecting RD to shout MEESTA JONES! at some point), Tomb Raider, Harry Potter & more. The animation was excellent again & there will be many gifs & snapshots of fun faces we missed in the ep over the coming days which I look forward to. Also I believe today was the 1st time the little Squee noise was used in S4, & my heart melts a little everytime it gets used so big fan of that. The nerd argument was great between RD & Twilight, although it could've been better if we knew a bit more about DD & her adventures first.

Whelp, can't say I didn't it while it lasted. Fun, action-packed episode. It was nice to see some of the old characters return (Daring Do, Azerchothingcan'tremembername) and it was cool to see some old references in the RD face. However, it is getting to the point where these references are becoming a grind and are serving only as fan service and nothing more. The show should not exist to serve the fandom, the fandom should exist to enjoy the show for what it is. The show writers should honestly come up with their own stuff rather than pulling gags from previous seasons to appeal to that 'nostalgia'.
However, the episode tripped for me on one main fronts: Rainbow Dash.
Rainbow Dash felt so ... wrong. I get that she is meant to be a statement on rabid fans and how uncomfortable it is for the person who is the idol. However, the way that it was deliver left no room for compassion for RD, it just constant beating left and right. It was really disheartening to see a character so well built up, ready to ascend to the next level as a character get brought down again just to deliver a message that "We get that you like the show but you need to check yourself."
Everything about her actions in this episode felt odd, it felt so forced. I hated it. Her conversation at the end with her friends was so awkward the episode just lost its momentum for me.
The episode is far from bad, it just wasn't one for me. Average. 5/10.

But I do kind of agree with you that even considering that it was still over the top. If anything it would have been nice for her to have grown as a character a bit and not freaked out as much as she did with the Wonderbolts. Pony Pros:

+ The action scenes were pretty good by this show's standards. Can't believe the characters can throw a punch and still not get a TV-Y7-FV rating.
+ For the matter, it felt like a throwback to 80s cartoons like GI Joe & DuckTales in terms of execution. Of course considering this show plays cliches straight all the time, it's hard to tell if it was intentional.

Conniving Cons:

- Daring Do not just being real but also some well kept secret doesn't make sense the more you think about it. I mean, wouldn't something like a a giant jaguar-man who can control cats & wants to take over the world with his army of followers be something of common knowledge, even in the wacked out world this show is set in?
- The main 6 hardly do anything in this episode once Daring Do shows up. Even if they help out in the end, that doesn't make up for how they (twice in Dashie's case) stand around & do nothing while Daring gets beaten up. It reminds me of the Star Trek episode "Assignment Earth", an episode that was just a pilot to a completely different show retooled to add the Enterprise crew to it yet hardly do anything important to the plot until near the end. That's what this reminds of, a backdoor pilot to a new show that highlights this exciting new character & her adventures at the expense of the regular cast.
- Pinkie Pie's "Random Holiday Celebration" joke was terrible, again the character devolves from an actual character to a walking outlet to "LOLRANDUMB" humor.
- Did they really have to give the hero worship lecture to Twilight? Applejack seemed like the better choice.

Neutral Notes:

* This episode kind of supports the theory that Twilight being an alicorn was something added late in development of the season. At least last week she flew a little, I don't think she ever got off the ground this episode. Digitally remove her wings & shorten her horn and nothing would've changed.

Well, that was stupid.

Pros:
- Some cute Dash moments
- Nice Aztec pony designs

Cons:
- Slowww. "I work alone" * (too much) with a rushed conclusion on that subplot.
- "They're just normal ponies" didn't work well when they were merely champions of Equestria, it REALLY doesn't work when Twilight's the fourth ALICORN PRINCESS of Equestria.
- "Let's all just watch a young mare get mugged by three stallions in her own home."
- Twilight doing all the logic: It would have been nice if everypony had represented a side (e.g. Applejack that Dash wasn't being honest with herself, Fluttershy that it's kind to help where you can). Better than that: Dash working it out for herself. This ep would have been a little better without the rest of the mane 6 in it.
- Daring Do being real: Why would Celestia allow Ahuitzotl to wander free as such a threat? How does an explorer have time to secretly be a successful author, especially if she's not a fan of her fans? She's still way too much like Dash. Why don't her enemies take advantage of the fame? How did no one else work this out?

I'm glad this isn't the only cartoon I watch, at least the others have managed some really entertaining, touching, and fun moments lately.

This was hands down the dumbest episode I've ever seen. Absolutely no standout moments and minute after minute of awful... everything! Story, characterization, consistency, common fucking sense, dear lord what a train wreck. I was honestly hoping that it would just all be a dream of Dash's. Ugh, I'm gonna need some time before I can even think about it again to criticize any specifics.

Questions:
Does anyone think this episode would have been a hell of a lot better had it been about the Wonderbolts?

Is the fact that Twilight's mom isn't the writer of the series finally an irreconcilable contradiction between the comics and the show? Then again I'd much rather that have been the case. "*grumble* Making me find where she lives... ah here it is. Wait, that's my parents' house!"
