Oh it's nowhere near to being my biggest problem with the episode, but I still maintain that it was stupid, and worse yet everyone agreed with AJ completely.
The not stupid thing to do would've been not making Twilight completely incompetent, but then you have 20% of the episode gone and you'd have to actually stop and think for a second of a way of using the time to do something that matters.
And really, they weren't lacking time at all. There were numerous things that could've easily been shortened or cut entirely, so many things were just there for no reason.

I can somewhat agree with that. I'm just saying that I can make sense of the stupid things that they put in there, because they do kind of make sense. People agreeing with Applejack makes total sense. She could be spouting nonsense, but she's Applejack. I'd do what she suggested too.

But the rock crocodile, despite being kind of of cool, felt too much like they were throwing a monster in there because it was on some checklist of what happens in that forest. If Twilight was going to lose to some face hugger gas monsters later then why not just have her get wiped out by that, but earlier? I don't think we'd even be having this argument if something knocked her the fuck out, and she had to stumble back to town. Everything from then one would have at least made sense.

And then when Discord convinces her to go die in the forest for a second time, she runs into the rock monster, which she can't defeat alone, and then her friends come and save her.

Then they all figure out the value of friendship and maybe we even get a scene of the four of them being able to assist the tree in any way

Speaking as a writer it isn't until I publish a comic that it occurs to me how much better that comic could have been. It's even better when a friend says something to me like, "I thought it was really clever how you did <this>." I had no fucking idea I was doing <this>.
