Now, you might think that that's neither adding nor taking anything away, but that's actually not correct, it's taking up very valuable space on a very important bar, it's positioned close to other buttons that do have functionality and requires at very least some thought to avoid, and more mouse movement to pass over. It's fractions of a second, but that's what a lot of high-end UI design is about - saving those fractions of a second. It's the same school of thought that moved the tabs to the top of the browser, because it makes them extremely easy to press because you don't have to hit a point vertically, just horizontally, as your mouse stops at the edge of the screen.
It's A Good Thing - tiny UI changes aren't done for fun, they're done after extensive testing and research. |
