It was a late show, and now both of you are walking home from the movie theater in the darkness of the night. Sure, city lights prevent total blindness, but she's hanging on to your arm tighter than you thought possible. She's a rather waify girl, how can she grip you this hard? Either way, you straighten your back and try to play the manly man, more masculine than you're used to. She's used to that confidence from you, push come to shove. Then you heard the scraping. The shuffling of feet on concrete, but you're not quite sure how far it is or where it's coming from. She squeaks and huddles closer to you. All you can do is run your hand through her hair and whisper some reassurance. You're quite tense yourself, but you can't show it. She needs you to be strong right now. Then more noise. Now a growl. The growl of a hungry dog, ready to attack. You turn, and it's there, staring the both of you down, ready to fight for its food. Oh, she says. It's only a puppy. A puppy? This thing could rip out your throat if it wanted. She reaches into her coat pocket, and pulls out a small tin. Wait a second, she keeps dog food in her coat? Before you can tell her how silly this is, she peels the lid back and sets the food on the streets, motioning for the dog to come forward. The beast limps toward you, guardedly sniffing the can before chowing down. She knows better than to pet the dog while it eats, but her eyes meet yours while you're staring in disbelief. See? She tells you how every creature only needs a little kindness to bring out the best. She leans her head on your shoulder as you remember. Yes, a little kindness. That's how she found you all those years ago. |
