I think the way it went down was, Luna wanted more power to eclipse (ha) her sister, but hadn't quite expected the whole transformation deal. Not that she was tricked, per se, just that she got more than she bargained for. Like the Venom symbiote in Marvel strengthening and reinforcing negative emotions of its host or something.

She brought it on herself, and she's responsible for her actions, but it wasn't just Luna that was Nightmare Moon. That's the guilt and fear that weighs on her post-NM; that she willingly succumbed to it before and couldn't control it.

That's fine.
I enjoyed them a lot more than I did S3 even though I did like S3 quite a bit.
It helps that there are less restrictions on the comic so the writers can get away with a lot more stuff you wouldn't see in the show.
Price is also a great artist. The guy managed to shoot his way up into my top 5 favorite comic book artist within 3 issues.

There was hardly any word limit in the Friendoff/Pony or Die and people can simply write things without worrying about a set limit to how much they need to write. I recall some writers at that time thought they couldn't write anything due to the word limit that was presented.
