It's only an Annual, so that means it will probably be the only one this year. And it has to be a prequel because they can't set anything in canon post-movie because that would be when a series and/or a sequel would take place.

I think her powers of foresight are more of the analytical nature; she can reasonably predict outcomes and is always working dozens if not hundreds of moves in advance (she must be a grandmaster at Chess and Go).

She didn't know much about the goings on of the other side of the mirror, though, but given at least that Sunset Shimmer seemed to have made it okay over the course of 2.5-5 years, it was reasonable to assume that it wasn't TOO dangerous. So the concept of an operative mission isn't the worst move she's ever made, but given the whole set-up, there wasn't a great reason to pick Twilight alone, either.

So yeah it's plot convenience playhouse.
