Sweet and Elite had a bad script.
It's based on a plot hole (why would Rarity need connections since she knows Twi and the Princess)
Continuity errors (Why didn't Rarity mention Dash's real credentials when she can remember some pointless advice Dash gave her)
A forced conflict (why did Rarity think she had to go to the Garden Party, never explained)
And arguably a disappointing resolution with a broken Aesop.

These things are not her fault, in fact, the episode being good was due entirely to the fact that it used her personality well.
So in essence, she was basically able to elevate the material she was give

The other problem is lying about Opal and the garden party. And here what consequences could there be with her friends? They are very good friends. Rarity just had a huge opportunity to further her career and even make her dreams real. They could understand that. Twilight could certainly do. Hell all that probably happened was she saying "Oh Rarity I wouldn't have gotten mad for that. You could have just told the truth" and the end

My fix would have been more of a "it's important to stay true to your friends" thing with her actually feeling ANY impact at all from having lied to them the entire time

She felt bad about that and when the time came for her to choose between connections and friends she chose her friends. She didn't know if Fancy will save her. For her that could have been a career suicide. If Fancy wasn't such a cool guy and also deemed her friends as uncultured swine Rarity would have been forever fucked. And she knew that, yet when the moment of truth came she still chose her friends.

There were only two things. Her lying to her friends about Opal because she wanted to go to the fancy party. Here Rarity should have known that her close friends, especially Twilight which considers her her best friend, would have understood. This isn't resolved but we can suppose that she discussed this with her friends which probably didn't find it a big deal.
Second one was her trying to keep her friends away from the high society ponies. That is because she knows they don't fit with them, at least not when they were drunk as fuck, and keep them from finding out the lie.
This problem is resolved when she stands for them.

Rarity is my least favorite of the main 6, but I don't hate her by any means. I don't hate any ponies
I hated S&E though, and it's fairly obvious that that falls on McCarthy's shoulders
But still, she is a writer for the show as a whole, and if the episode makes people like Rarity less, it is, again, not her fault, but McCarthy's
People don't just hate characters, they hate how they are developed and portrayed, which all falls upon the writers of all the episodes

tl;dr: Don't try to shove Rarity dislike on McCarthy, it's the duty of all the writers to write an appealing character
