The modern reader is exposed to a massive amount of information through media.

For instance, if I say "A knight showed up" the reader instantly calls to mind plate mail, a big helmet, sword and possibly shield, maybe a banner.

Some of these details may be important for pacing, or to fill in the things we don't know about the knight, like what's on the banner, if he's carrying a halberd instead of a sword, etc. But the fact we're so exposed and familiar with information is something unique to modern times.

To be fair, knight was a poor example because there are all kinds of knights.

Looking back over it, a room would have been a good example. I was just reading a passage from an otherwise good author, where she cataloged everything in this little girls room.

I ended up skipping it because it was both too many details, and unimportant ones. The room wasn't special, just had what you'd expect. She could have mearly said "The room was decorated and designed for a young girl" and it would have served the same purpose.

I mean, other than the fact I'm prejudice against the linking verb "was." But I'd rather not dive so deep into points I'm not trying to make.

All this being said about too much information, typically, I find the problem is opposite in most starting writers, which is probably why the suggestion "be detailed" gets thrown around.

Lots of starting writers end up so bare bones that the prose is actually boring, or so sparse that it is not enough for the reader to fill in the gaps.

As with almost everything in life, there is a balance being struck between too many or irrelevant details, and being so sparse as to not function.
