I didn't think much of the idea of pony DVDs - we get them in good quality online, what's the big deal? - until someone suggested commentaries.

Now, normally kids don't give two shits about commentaries. Are kids going to listen to the director and producer and some actors who sound creepily like their favourite characters talking about production? Probably not.

    BUT

What if they did their commentaries in character? Kids would love that, and it'd make the DVDs more viable. It'd also be rad as hell to watch episodes while the mane six chat overtop of them about "their experiences" in each one.

How in character are we talking about? As in they're their characters if they were actors on a show, Roger Rabbit style? Or they're themselves narrating themselves like it's a big diary or reminiscence or something?

I suppose it WOULD give them another feature to put on the box to advertise to their actual demographic, and get some people to actually buy DVDs instead of just downloading the episodes.

Sadly, that's just a mockup someone made. It's not real. Right now Hasbro only releases the show in cheap one-disc episode sets to see if it's profitable.

    HAHA
Sorry, OP, but you know if Hasbro is ever going to release a DVD it will not be with that kind of box. They would definitely use those generic promotional pictures of the characters they always use on license products.

Besides that cover looks like a mess. Whoever made was definitely trying to look for a cover "he" liked rather than one general audiences would like. Characters looking silly + not all main characters on the cover =/= good sales.

I don't see why Hasbro wouldn't do the commentary thing, it costs them next to nothing beyond some writing time and a little more voice-work. Their voice actors are already getting paid, you could probably tack it on.

    >> Anonymous 02/11/12(Sat)18:08 No.34199787
    >>34199694

The neat thing about this idea is that it's basically viable on into the future. Even if the voice actors grow older and their voices change (the CMC especially), the commentaries can be cast as the characters looking back years later.

Meaning that it could be years later, when Hasbro gets their shit together and sells some fancy special edition box set full of features trying to rack up their last sales on the franchise, or as part of some other project that comes along. Fuck, maybe some pony-fan wins the lottery or even becomes successful on their own and does something like that with the boon.
    >> Anonymous 02/11/12(Sat)18:10 No.34199827
    >>34199765

Why not? Tara does loads of voice work. It's not like they'd do a regular commentary track (sitting around and chatting idly about the episode), kids don't care for those anyway. Making it in character would make it like any other VA job the voice actors would do for the regular episodes, scripted and all.

What's interesting about DJ P0N3 is first they said her name back in May with the Equestria Girls commercial, now they're making a toy. I would bet money we'll see a Derpy toy at some point. Hasbro is embracing this fandom far more than anyone could have possibly predicted. Perhaps it's unlikely that she'll actually be called Derpy (we have to wait and see if DJ P0N3 actually gets her name), but at the very least I think we can bet we'll get a gray pegasus with blond hair and a bubble cutie mark.

It's unprecedented for a girls cartoon.

GI Joe, Transformers, etc have adult fans who are mostly male, but Hasbro embraces that because it's a natural continuation of the primary demographic. But adult males liking MLP? They've never had to deal with that and frankly if they completely ignored us I don't know that it really would have affected their bottom line. We were buying the toys long before they acknowledged us.

I'm just saying I can picture the higher ups getting concerned that over spending too much time focusing on a demographic that's nowhere near the intended one. Not that doing so is a bad thing, but six months ago if I tried to tell you guys that Derpy would get officially named, have a speaking role, and that we'd be getting a toy of DJ P0N3 you guys would be listing tons of reasons why that could never happen in a million years.

So again, by no means a bad thing, just unexpected.

I haven't heard that until now, but here's the thing you need to remember about nostalgic reboots/revisits: give it enough time and a company will often reconsider. New people get hired, new trends in toys come and go-- the stuff that's being marketed now to the nostalgia demographic might have been impossible to sell a mere five years ago. It's not like Hasbro carved "Fuck The Inhumanoids" in stone and displayed it in their front lobby. Anything is possible if you give it time.

I have three of the original McDonalds toys (which I really need to get off my ass and buy the rest of, they're already pretty rare), and the gift set that came out back in December 2010 with Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Twilight, Spike and Celstia. Planning on getting the TRU box set with all the blind bag ponies since they don't sell the blind bags stateside and I fucking had blind bag toys anyway.

I'll probably get DJ P0N3 because of what it represents, but I'm trying to avoid most of the main toy line because they're so painfully off-model. If and when Hasbro makes figures that are show accurate, I will buy them up like crazy (especially if they make show-accurate plushes like the ones being sold on eBay for insane prices by very talented bronies).

    Ponychan is full of faggots.

    /co/ is where it's at.

I just don't want you guys to forget your roots or act like "brony" is something completely different from what you are. You're like Star Trek fans who insist on being called "Trekkers." Language might evolve, but you're not allowed to simply abandon a word simply because you don't like the connotation it's created.

To be honest, though, I agree that the word "brony" leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. It's like saying "gamer" or worse, "hardcore gamer." It brings about an image I don't want to be associated with. It's just that when I see such a rejection of something I thought was so ingrained in the forum that introduced me to this show I realize that I've missed a lot and you guys are all a different lot of /co/mrades.

Not to say you should hide the fact that you enjoy the show (unless you feel that's necessary), but there's a fine line between being open about your interests and being a faggot about them.

As with most other fanbases that go downhill: there's upward momentum to stop the weird fans taking the limelight.

Almost by definition, it's the crazy obsessive ones who are going to be the loudest and most noticed. And the louder and more noticeable they are, the worse it gets as they attract similar minded people and the rational ones don't want to be associated with it.

Because at the end of the day, the normal fans aren't going to make a stand and try to take back the show as a decent piece of entertainment. They'll simply watch something else.

It's just a cartoon, after all.

    Experiment Day 05

    Pony-Mind Preparation: 0 Hours
    -Sick

    Amount of Sleep: 12+ Hours

    Pony-Dream Achieved: Positive/Inconclusive

Notes: Due to being sick, I have spent most of the day being asleep and miserable. But this was a good thing for the Experiment! Two quasi-Pony dreams were achieved. Still nothing solid containing live Ponies, but the process appears to be improving.

Somewhere around the 9 Hour mark during sleep, I dreamed I hopped off a train with Brad Jones from thecinemasnob.com into a green grassy country. We walked along a deserted concrete path towards some kind of destination. Someone else may have been with us. At one point I asked him what he really thought about Noah Antwiler (The Spoony One from SpoonyExperiment.com) and he gave me a sly smile. Finally we wandered along a short steep slope by the shoulder of a road and an odd yellow bus stopped beside us. I can't recall whether we were going to join them or whether they were going to resupply us or anything, but the people who came out of the bus had several My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic plush toys. In particular was Derpy, who apparently squirts water at you if you squeeze her.

The second dream took place at my church (though it looked like my old high school library). I was called over to a tabletop RPG session containing about twelve people on a round table. They all had scripts in front of them which apparently had the campaign introduction written down like a screenplay. Some things happened at this session, but of particular note was that the primary antagonist of the campaign was Celestia herself who was brooding over a storm-racked castle. Secondly, one of the players at the table was a tall skinny woman in a regal white sweater who wore square glasses and had a hairstyle resembling Rarity. Was it Rarity herself in human form? I couldn't be positive about that.

The fact that I had two quasi-Pony-Positive dreams gives me some much needed hope after the dry-spell of the past two days. The appearance of actual characters (in toy and cosplay form) is a big step forward. Could Pony-Dreams with actual Ponies be around the corner?

On a more negative note however, this confirms a doubt that I was having. These dreams came after no Pony-Mind Preparation whatsoever. This could mean that saturating oneself with Pony could lead to no Pony-Dreams or it could mean that Pony saturation followed by no Pony whatsoever could help with the process (as was pointed out to me in a thread yesterday). Or it could be because I've had more sleep today then I've had all week. Perhaps I should dedicate one day a week to no Pony-Mind Preparation and as much sleep as possible respectively? Regardless, it was a good day for science.

In case you haven't noticed Drawfag, I'm not the sharpest cheese in the fridge. All I know about dreaming is the little things I pick up on here and there and my own experiences.

In the past I've focused on a single bit of media or a game so much that I've had dreams about it over and over for a little while so that's what I was going on. Basically I was hoping to induce Pony-Dream through the Tetris Effect. But as you and another anon have pointed out, this is probably counter-intuitive. So I think I'll cool off on the Pony for a little while, which is good because watching an hour of Pony everyday gets a little daunting.

    Drawfag is credit to team.

Well, she'd probably let you play with her feet in a FWB kinda way, except she wouldn't ever have sex with you and you wouldn't with her because you're mostly just friends. I imagine she'd be your roommate.

It all started when she came home from work one day complaining about how stupid people are. She'd grab a can of tea from the fridge or some shit and plop down next to you on the couch, then begin taking off her high heels. As both shoes hit the ground, she'd throw her head back in relief and mention how sore they made her feet. The smell hits your nose, and you'd decide that you've got to hold her feet in your hands.

Of course by this point you've stopped moving your character in whatever vidya you're playing to watch her feet. Before she can recover from her head-throwing-back-in-relief thing, you'd catch yourself and start playing again. After some casual mutual discussion, you'd drive the conversation back to how awful her day was, then subtly to how sore her shoes made her feet. She'd say things like "oh I knooooow!" and shit like that, then before you can dwell on it too long and it gets creepy, you'd lightly slip in the fact that you're not too proud to help a friend out with a massage.

Long story short, you're busy massaging her feet while she's watching TV and relaxing. She lets out a few "aaahs" and "oooohs" while you marvel at how wonderful her feet are, and how much more wonderful they smell.

Dear god what have I done

I'd just like to stop you for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. Well thank you. The Tetris Effect (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheTetrisEffect) which used to be known as Tetris Dreams has actually been studied by card-carrying scientists, so I should probably be doing research on it as opposed to "doing what I think it means."

This whole project better not get on the news. It's one of those things I only share with my "internet friends" and I'd prefer not to be known in real-world circles as, "That guy who wishes he could dream about My Little Pony."

All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linuxs

There was one game that I can recall that they made, and that was a game that involved you flying around shooting down trollfaces while they shot ">implying" at you. I'm not even kidding, and I unfortunately don't have a link for the demo video.

There was something they had a team working on before called "BroQuest". They released ONE shitty looking tech demo just to prove to people it was actually being worked on. I have never seen anything about it after that

There really is a Little Pony, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. My Little Pony is the kernel: the program on the television that allocates the audience's resources to the other programs on the HUB. The program is an essential part of a television network, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of being on the HUB.
