>I posted this a couple threads back in response to the "old" lineup - dunno if any of you saw it.
I know what I'm inviting by posting this, but...
...I actually kinda like Ross' work, in a weird way.
One or two of his designs, given some tweaking, might actually be able to fit the characters - mostly looking at Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy here. Pinkie Pie is a bouncy, fun character, and even with the fatty-fetishism - as long as it's not taken too far out of control - the look actually kinda works; ditto Fluttershy being so tall that she stands out, even though that's the last thing she'd want - turning a blushing violet into a weeping willow; and Rarity's look reminds me of 18th-century French nobility or something out of an Italian commedia dell'arte troupe - there's a sort of theatricality to it which fits her.
BUT, being blunt, the others need work - and a lot of it. He didn't put near as much effort into them as he did the first three, and it's fairly obvious. RD doesn't pop at all. There's nothing really interesting about her, nothing to draw your attention to the character - and I think I get he was going for a sun-bleached, farmer's tan look with Applejack, but that super-dark tan just does not work, and Twilight's skin color is both too cool and too dark - if you're going to make her brown, make it a warmer, lighter brown or olive-tone. Think India or Mediterranean.
But as an artist, I think it's nice he at least has ostensible reasons for making them look the way he did, beyond "because it looks cool," and it's fun to see someone breaking away from the norm of fanart, and trying to differentiate them so they're immediately recognizable.
It's a pity his attitude's so shit. It really is. |
