It's a very basic, simple tool to help you learn to draw shit. You're just starting out, don't flip to the middle of the book.

Like, you've probably seen this, but just in case here it is again. This isn't a GREAT guide, nor enough to really get rolling, but it should help. With the amount of trouble it looks like you're having, I would say try, just once, to copy their pony picture using the method shown. Don't trace it of course, but just follow the instructions, and see why the shapes are what they are. Something I notice consistently is that the 'body' circles you lay out are completely separate entities, when generally speaking they overlap a bit in guides. As a result, your pony bodies end up way too long.

Also, take some time to practice drawing circles that are more... Um... Circley, I guess. What you've drawn there looks more like a peanut.
