Many years ago, but after the Nightmare Moon incident, humans and ponies lived more or less side by side (some of his chapters referenced Celestia hiding something, and it was the fact she knew what he was). Celestia created a crystal of vast plot-making power in order to try to free Luna from NMM's grasp. But the humans were jealous of Celestia's unshakable lock on control hijacked that crystal and tried to launch a rebellion. It failed, so the head tied himself to the crystal and vowed revenge.

The crystal sought out another human, which was Mike, or whatever the hell his name was, and transported him to Equestria. Celestia sends Mike to retrieve said plot-crystal while Mike is getting strange flashes of murdering all the ponies. Eventually, he touches the crystal, the wizard tells him to kill all ponies and Mike says "fuck you" and they have a fight, mano-on-mano.

I ended up suggesting that he change the wizard's command to a wizard's offer that would actually tempt Mike as a character. Something more along the lines of "You kill Celestia, and you will take her place, living with the ponies for eternity." Something to give an inner struggle.
