Every emotion comes from a choice. The moral inventory step of the 12-step / AA program means recording the choices that you and others have made in your life, which instincts they affirmed or conflicted with, and realizing how that affected your view of the world.
In my case, my dad told me in the water park locker room not to go into the stall to change into my swim trunks, but to stay in the main locker room like a real man. I chose in that moment not to be a man. Then I went into the stall and changed into my swim trunks. Thereafter, I was intrigued by gender transformations, the life-stories of the transgendered, neuter-gender sentients like robots and Gumby.
I saw Planet 51 a week after I deconstructed the memory, and their smooth, featureless frontsides did nothing for me. That's when I knew things had irrevocably changed. |
