There's nothing in Derpy's portrayal that implies she's retarded. Clumsy, sure. Unlucky, yes. But there's a big leap between "this character sat down and the floor caved in" and "this character is a retard."

It's weird.

First seeing a crazy-eyed pony hidden in the background was inexplicably hilarious. It was something strange and out of place.

But gradually Derpy became this huge fanon thing, and I never found yelling 'muffins' especially funny. So then all Derpy ever did was remind me of the fans, and make me groan. But that's just fanon, people said. It doesn't change the show.

And it didn't.

Instead you still got moments like Derpy poking out of the chicken coup at the end of the song. Again, it was something that shouldn't have been there, and it was funny for a while.

But now you get today's episode, and it's like seeing a piece of the fanbase patched directly into the show. And really, I want to be reminded of the fanbase as little as possible. It's strange and out of place, only this time it isn't funny.

All that said, it should be obvious I never quite got the fascination with Derpy. Everyone goes on about how she's 'ours', but I've never had any attachment to her.

That's actually exactly what happened. Lauren Faust confirmed this on her DA account. The pony in that scene was originally a generic background pegasus. At the last minute, Jason Theissen had the animators go back and recolor the pony, and add the Derp eyes.

Nothing from the original script was changed at all.
