Ripples on water, ripples with no source or cause.
“Mimi staré katika bakuli baridi, roho ruzuku kweli kwa staré nyuma!”
The foreign words sank into the cauldron, the watery wrinkles intensified in response, dancing into circular patterns. Impossibly, the ripples passed through eachother without any reflection, as if each occupied its own niche in space and time.
The black and white face of Zecora gently ebbed and swayed in the accelerating froth. The dim light of a few ancient candles were all that stood against the darkness.
The Sun tried desperately to bring light to this dark place by peeking through the tightly shut curtains, but it was not welcome, its warmth would cloud the allsight.
“Roho ruzuku hekima kama, nafasi na wakati!”
The water began to swirl with an unknown power, and the reflection of what little candlelight illuminated its surface, ceased.
Their was only void now, a true doorway.
“Kuingia.....” She whispered, inviting the universe to lay itself bare in the basin.
An image materialized quite suddenly.
Shadowy form, faintly glowing eyes with pupils like razors, staring directly at her through the barely-there water, its features hardly visible save for a general sense of its expression...
Curiosity, and confusion.
The same face Zecora happened to be making.
The water heaved and began pressing against the air in the hut, transferring a long, low sound across the space between spaces.
BWAAAAAAAAAAAANNNG
The deafening, low tone sent Zecora tumbling backwards and onto her haunches in surprise.
For a moment, the very space within the dark hut seemed to heave in tune with the alien note. |
