12/22/11(Thu)22:54 No.32589392>>32589122 Oh of course, but the person's gripe with the book was a little asinine. He first claims the book is useless because some of the ideas presented in it are obvious to him, ignoring the fact that the purpose of the book was to put forth some guidelines for the english language in black and white terms, specifically to improve a person's writing on a basic level by bringing up the fundamentals of writing.
He goes on to claim that the book should be ignored completely because of it's opinions on the passive voice (using a quote from someone else as the entirety of his argument), ignoring the fact that the book repeatedly reminds the reader to differentiate between times when passive voice is appropriate and unnecessary. The other gripe brought up is the examples, and a perceived bias in the examples, ignoring the fact that they're supposed to be simple and make a point on the most basic level.
On a personal note, this person mentions they are in high school, then goes on to mandate what writing aids are acceptable or otherwise for all writers, disregarding the fact that his lack of experience in writing compared to the veterans he goes toe to toe with might be something to consider, and the fact that people have differing opinions on writing. |
