You've got to take into account the intention of the author in this. I believe the play was NOT meticulously crafted to be something inaccurate. I think if we ask Word of Faust or so on, all the writers will go, "No, this is how it happened."

However, I temper this with the fact that I don't think the writers are trying to make a consistent or coherent world for the ponies to exist in. So, if a later episode contradicts this, like another history episode, then you can bring out the Nativity Defense. But until then, the play is 100% canon.
