My theory:

Princess Platinum is an ancestor to Celestia and Luna. (The unicorns were responsible for the cycle of the sun back then.)
After Equestria is founded, the three races live in harmony but still answer to their own respective rulers.
Over time, conflict naturally erupts between the three tribes again, paving the way for the rise of Discord.
Celestia and Luna, then the princesses of the unicorns, defeat him, and the three races agree to live under a single rule from that day on.

The royal line either becomes mixed sometime before Celestia (weird) or magically turns into alicorns to celebrate the unification of Equestrian rule (flowers and sparkles)

Captured as well, she is taken to a town to be sold, when at the bridge of Ponyville there is a shoot out and the slavers are killed by a pair of raiders. Lilpip frees jack, and they are able to fight them off and kill them. However, after Jack unsuccessfully tries to take what Lilpip has by force, they part ways, and she heads toward Carousel Boutique. Arriving there heads to sleep.

Earth ponies have a horticultural magic that the other two pony races lack. In other words, earth ponies can make plants and crops grow really fast... with their innate powers. Plus they're really strong for some reason.

Evidence:
At 13:00, Applejack gives a small demonstration of how fertile the soil can be by making a plant sprout forth from the clump of soil in her hoof. It's downright magical. Pic entirely related.

So this gives each pony race a special and unique power.

Earth Pony: Power to grow crops really fast
Pegasi: They fly, can walk on clouds, and take care of the weather.

It was an earth pony settlement, if they didn't have many pegasi or unicorns, then relying on them could have been fatal where shit to go down and they lost them. Absolute worst case, they'd have to get pegasi in from another settlement, but everything else can be done without magic - so just for the sake of safety, it should be.
