The pony tribes used to live separately in a sort of vague feudal system, with the slow and easily-lead earth ponies forced to provide for the vicious pegasi and the manipulative unicorns.
Their bitter rivalry, due to the nature of their universe, begins to kill the world, causing an endless winter and the death of all life around them. Presumably, this also produces the malevolent god Discord, though his powers do not manifest immediately.
The pony tribes end up uniting and establishing harmony, which manifests as a physical essence. They use this essense to forge the Elements of Harmony.
Discord paradoxically grows to power due to the harmonic relationship of the pony tribes, now a single nation, and begins his corruption of the world.
Celestia and Luna, either due to interbreeding of the three tribes or as a further manifestation of the magical harmony, use the Elements of Harmony to seal Discord in stone. They ascend to godhood and rule Equestria together.
Sometime later, the importance of harmony is lost. The unicorns regain their status as nobility (though their role as raisers of the sun is lost to the Alicorns) and the pegasi are established as a warrior caste, and the earth ponies the peasant caste.
Luna and Celestia increasingly lose their harmony, and Luna is subjugated to the lesser role of keeper of the night. She rebels (due to malevolent forces as manifestation from the discord) and is imprisoned in the moon. Celestia becomes sole ruler, demonizes Luna (establishing Nightmare Night to that effect).
Luna eventually escapes, the Mane Six inherit the Elements of Harmony, etc. Their harmony reinvigorates Discord, freeing him once again, and once again is defeated. |
