Oh, well, copypasta time since they don't care as much for fair, sensible criticism as much as they want to believe they do.
I agree that the scenes that weren't the play weren't exactly up to snuff, and were probably my least favored element of the episode. The animosity between the main characters before and after the play paralleling the moral of the play pretty much wrote itself, so I can't begrudge it for being too obvious (and their reaction to the growl of the wendigos sparking their unity was admittedly amusing, if circumstantial), but I guess it just felt too shallow.
On the plus side, though, I really like how the play turned out. Especially considering time constraints, it just really felt whole and left little space that was unused. I have a soft spot for ponies in costumes, though this is just personal taste; the quips and visual jokes were loads of fun ("The world is round, there's no up or down" was perhaps my favorite line in just how Pinkie said it, and the scene with Rarity riding Twilight was irresistible); watching Rarity, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie ham it up was all sorts of fun; it contained the interactions between the sensible Applejack and the wily Pinkie I've been waiting for, even if they were actors; the ending moral was benign and sweet, if somewhat syrupy (though I frankly wasn't really expecting much else); the wendigos and the heart spell were well-rendered and intriguing; and all-and-all it's just pleasant to see everything come together in the peaceful, harmonic world I've come to know and love in the show.
Overall, a rich, succulent, feel-good episode with a few scraps of fat and gristle at the tips that aren't really my taste. Just cut them away since they only really are there for exposition and closure, and you have a satisfying experience. 7/10. |
