I think this was all a fairy tale. The reason being it seems to contradict what we know about te history. Step 6. 1,000 years later, Nightmare Moon breaks free, and Twilight Sparkle and co. rediscover the Elements of Harmony to defeat NM, who reverts back to Luna.
