Honestly I think its the same deal as family guy, not that the before and after is that different. Its just that when the show was canceled there were only a set number of shows that people watched over and over, that familiarity made them like it all the more. But now that the series is back there's no impetus to re-watch the new episodes and become as enamored with them as the pre-cancellation stuff.

Its like how people have nostalgia goggles for reboots, except these were both cases where the "reboot" was done by the original creators.
